I thought this one won't be good when I first taste it but on the second/third thought this one is really good. Recommended to leave it breath for 5-10 minutes before drinking...
Appleton also makes a 12 year old that is not labelled "rare". This is not the same expression as the other 12 year old and despite the label "rare" is inferior in taste.
No Sugar added; great nose/taste, very fruity - that's rum for me. Price is awesome for this Jamaican Perfection. Cool Man ;)
Not as smooth as some sipping rums and it wouldn't be my first choice but still a reasonable selection.
I like this rhum very much. I try this one in Bar'H Chic located in Policoro, Italy. With a toscan cigar, vert good experience.
This rum reviews much better than it tastes...for me. I'm still pretty new to aged rums, so maybe my pallet is just still immature. However, I'll have this bottle in my collection for a while. Maybe I'll have an updated review with a better opinion before this bottle is gone. As always, I prefer my rum over ice with a healthy splash of Coke.
The aroma is strong: berry jam. Classic dry taste, 43% burns seriously. It gives warmth and strength. Heavy within normal limits. The effect of confidence, calm.
Awesome tuba.
Very light and "watery" - by watery I just mean not very thick. Just light and airy. But it does have some burn without a lot of deep flavor. It's fine, just not a fan. Would like to try the 21 year though.
Having become a Foursquare fan, I am usually sceptical about blends.
Two things caught my attention and made me reconsider:
Unlike Solera rums, Appleton's age statements are the MINIMUM age of the rum included, not the oldest.
Jamaican law prohibits adding sugar.
The parent company Campari has completed a rebranding process for their 3 younger products in 2019, which now calls this "rare blend". The label has changed - the contents has not.
Nice cardboard tube, chunky bottle, makes a nice present. Screwcap. Aged in American oak after blending.
Dark amber / mahagony colour.
Lovely complex nose of ripe fruit and nuts.
The typical Jamaican funk of volatile esters is very restrained, not the bursting over ripe banana of a Hampden or Mezan. It delivers the aromas gently and beautifully.
Same in the mouth. Gentle, full aromas, not overpowered by the 43% alcohol.
The fruity notes carry over into to woody tones from the oak barrels, which linger.
This is a dry rum (sweetness 1/5)
Gentle burn.
In summary a very high quality rum full of flavour but of understated Jamaican character.
Considering that in 2019 it costs around £35 in the UK, maybe it should score a 9. Great stuff.
Such a really solid rum. One of the one's that really got me into sipping. It's still has a perfect taste for the price
It wasn't what I was hoping for for the age, better luck next time.
It’s a decent rum,you can buy better for ‘this price...It’s definitely a sipping rum..complex with a long aftertaste...I like it BUT there is something odd when I taste it...I can’t describe it but something destroys my taste in it
Finale : long, notes de réglisse.
Everything else has been said. Man that acidity really telling of the fact that there must be some rum in this much older than 12yo.
It started good with a fruity sweetness, raisins and a little vanille. Candy syrup also, lots of alcohol. After a few sips it all seems to dissipate and just the alcohol burn remains...
Nice full body with strong melassa tones. Not too much sweet, not dry, well ballanced.
This is clearly well made. Smooth, no alcohol burn. Mixes well. You need to decide if you like that funk. You notice it in the aroma and on the rocks. Great rum n coke, can take over w ginger beer. I still can't decide if I like this funk, but the rum n coke is really good. Try it make your own decisions
At $32 in Ohio (4/19) this one is a great bargain! Rich aroma, lightly sweet and fruity. Warming alcohol in the nose. Light sweetness, oaky, vanilla, lightly fruity. Hints of molasse.s Good body and warming on the palate. Expected lightly funky finish but pleasant. A good daily sipper and a great mixer. Great value for the cost. I'd think a really good entry rum for those wanting to try better aged rums. Well balanced. This one will be on hand as long as I can get it. Recommend!
Edit 10/16/19 - Every time I revisit this rum I am impressed. This isn't huge on Hogo but it's there and a great way to get your feet wet on a good Jamaican. Great as an every day sipper and superb as a mixer. Hard to beat for the price. I stand solid on this as a very strong 7 - 7.5. Everyone should have it on the shelf.
I tried a sip. Fantastic. I mixed it with a little. Delicious. Really nice at this price level.
Poctivy jamajsky rum, v chuti melasa a "funk", 43 voltov, jeden z najlepsich rumov, aky som zatial pil.
So I’m in a fancy restaurant. Of course they’re heavy on whiskey. I asked about the rum and their top shelf is this and Zacapa 23 with which I’m familiar. I ordered an old fashioned and asked for a straight sip of the AE12. Good stuff.
