I really wanted to like Balcones Texas Rum. Unfortunately, I can't say that I do.

The aroma is actually quite pleasant with dried apricot, caramel, oak, and ethanol. On the palette it is quite hot and rough- young. Age statement of "At least 23 months in oak." The ABV was written on the label in silver Sharpie and smeared, but I believe it says 63.8%.

I have tried it neat, over ice and with a splash of water. I cannot recommend it neat, but the addition of ice or water make it more enjoyable. I think this rum has potential in an old fashioned.

There are in excess of one million and one fantastic rums at this price point. Only buy if you want to support Balcones.

Bought on a trip to Texas, unfortunately not something I would purchase twice! Pretty nasty, on par with Bundaberg, even drowning in coke didn't help it too much :(

Tried the Balcones Texas Rum on a very rainy Sunday. Bottle looks very cheap, label is made by a five year old, but the color is very nice deep dark brown. Smell test reveals a very immature rum and the taste test does not prove otherwise. Maybe the kind folks in Texas should stick with making whisky only. Balcones has a nasty burn at the end and not a pleasant lingering of boozy cheap whisky breath. In a blind test, 95% would say this is a cheap Bourbon, 5% would be leaning towards a very dry rum.

When I originally reviewed, this was only this one to choose.

I was actually drinking the Special Release.
