My favorite rum I’ve had so far. Not the easiest to find, but I recommend picking it up if you do. Smooth and easy to sip.
I would not purchase this one. So many other rums out there to try. With that said it is a decent rum with something to offer. I just do not like the oily and greasy feel in the mouth when you drink it.
As expected, smooth, easy a bit manipulated but fun.
Carmel, nut and some burnt marshmallow.
Worth the spend
40% rum aged for 23 years in American oak barrels. Named after the schooner that allegedly supplied the American black market with Caribbean rum during Prohibition. Unfortunately, the distillery changed the production and began distributing a new version under the Gran Reserva Superior label. I haven't tasted this new version yet, but other rum drinkers say the nose/taste is a bit weaker. Therefore, I recommend those who like this rum to still purchase the version that says 23 years, which is already in last pieces sale. I have done so.
Bottle: Really nice, round with a thick bottom capped with a cork. There is a note on the neck with the batch and bottle number.
Colour: Dark amber.
Nose: Vanilla, caramel, cappuccino, sweet almonds, dried fruits and hints of wood barrel.
Taste: Perfectly smooth and slightly sweet. Vanilla, wood and caramel are clearly dominant. There is also some tropical fruit (mango, figs and unripe banana). The taste is a little sharper than the aroma.
Finish: Medium to long.
Conclusion: An excellent light sweet rum. It lacks a little sharpness in the taste and a little more variety in the palate. It's a little too monotonous for my taste.
Overall rating: 9 out of 10
Moderate intensity in the nose with aroma's of caramel, vanilla and yeast.
A smooth and warming mouthfeel with aroma's of caramel, vanilla, toffee and some sherry hints with a very long finish.
A very complex and perfectly balanced rum
Flavorful, but not over powering. Nice notes throughout. One of the best sipping rums.
Naozaj ma príjemne prekvapil. Výrazná drevitost , ktorá je nad sladkosťou. Tá je decentná a príjemná. Skutočne fajn rum k cigare, alebo na relax po jedle. Odporúčam ako jeden z mála sladsich
I love this rum. If you like plantation xo, than you will love this. Its not as sweet and has a little kick to it. More smokeyness in the aftertaste... Just an all out great rum.
I will keep my rating a bit lower for now.. I spent some time with tasting of this bottle.. but it is still difficult to say if is a exceptional rum or just a regular rum with some harsh notes of pepper. I will let you know.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Very close to it's 18 Year Old Brother

Having tried their 12 and 18 year olds, I finally got around to trying this 23 year old. It reminds me of the 18 year old except I don't notice any leather and the wooden notes are ever so slightly more. This one is also $7 more than the 18 year old, so flip a coin to see which one you prefer on any given day. Just stay away from the 12 year old. I still recommend the 18 Year as the best buy from them.
Update May 7, 2019: For those of you who still have the old bottles of K&S with them being widest at the top, KEEP THEM as they will soon become collector's items!!! The new bottles are totally round and look like rum versions of Chambord Liqueur. I kid you not! I at first criticized my bottle of K&S 12 as being hard to pour and needing two hands. At least the cork fits tight and the bottle is unlikely to spill on a rocking boat out to sea! After having a lot a very bad rum bottle designs, those original K&S bottles are for keeps! Hang on to them.
Update August 7, 2021: This is a sad day for a once proud rum distiller. Just read my update for the K&S 18 to see why my rating has dropped.
