I'm not the sophisticated rum drinker that some of you are. So, this review won't contain descriptions of taste that make no sense to me. Quite simply, this is obviously a very high quality rum, smooth and amazingly pleasant, it is absolutely enjoyable to sip straight.
...really, really good stuff. Within the Kirk and Sweeney family only topped by the 23 years old one.
Weak and strange flavoring. I don’t get the all the love for Kirk and Sweeney.
Sweet, smooth and a beautiful nose. One of my favourite rums.
Not strong, smooth and a taste of chocolat. I like it. Very good Rum. Price and Quality is excellent.
One of my favourites, strong but also smooth in the finish, vanilla and a little coffee taste with a sweet smell
Probablemente el ron con el mejor balance que conozco. Delicioso, muy frutado y mucha dulzura. Suave en nariz y boca. Uno de mis favoritos, y la botella con su gruesa base me encanta. Un regalo dominicano.
I actually like this better than the 23. You get more vanilla and spice flavors and scent. While the elder 23 I felt was smooth, but lost some of the sweetness and flavors...and was more smokey/Woody.
Fantastic on the nose, with the vanilla scent coming through. Front end heat gives way to a very smooth supper. I recommend letting your bottle air out a bit after the first decorking. I left the cork off for about a half hour and then poured and enjoyed with a single ice cube which really allowed for the deeper flavors to come out. Really a quality rum. I personally like the 23 year old better because the flavors are more even and the slight taste of oak is slightly more pronounced, but I think it’s a matter of preference. I DID throw back half a bottle while at a recent gathering friends, so I guess that says something. Buy with confidence.
Impressive bottle, darker colour of rum
nice smell with vanilla and butterscotch
taste is sweet, at first moment vanilla, later old wooden taste. very interesting,
old rum ( not solera method) with specific taste....
The younger brother to this rum is K&S 12 Year and was one of the very first rums that I reviewed on this site. I was very impressed at first, especially for it being so cheap. Then after three weeks, flavors of leather dominated. At that point, I bid farewell to K&S. I also figured that most of the cost goes into the fancy bottles, so that had me wondering just how cheap was the rum inside.
I have decided to give them a second chance with this 18 year old dry rum. The aroma is caramel with a faint hint of leather. On the tongue, it is peppery and thin because of only 4 gpl of added sugar. The after taste is caramel with a faint hint of leather and some complex Caribbean spices. There is no after burn. So far so good. I will check it again in about 3 weeks to see if the same thing happens to this one as what happened to my long gone 12 year old.
Update October 15, 2018: This is a good day for rum tastings since it is pouring down rain outside. It is now one day shy of the three week window that I had originally promised to allow. Guess what? This bottle has not turned into a leather bomb like the K&S 12 did. It is still very enjoyable and worthy of it's 8 rating that I originally gave it.
Update April 22, 2019: For fans of this K&S 18, the aroma and taste is very similar to South Bay Batch 18, also from the Dominican Republic. However, the after taste of the South Bay blows the woody after taste of this one out of the water. Give that one a try if you like this one. I have to special order my supply of South Bay rums to be picked up locally, but they are worth the trouble.
Update May 7, 2019: For those of you who still have the old bottles of K&S with them being widest at the top, KEEP THEM as they will soon become collector's items!!! The new bottles are totally round and look like rum versions of Chambord Liqueur. I kid you not! I at first criticized my bottle of K&S 12 as being hard to pour and needing two hands. At least the cork fits tight and the bottle is unlikely to spill on a rocking boat out to sea! After having a lot a very bad rum bottle designs, those original K&S bottles are for keeps! Hang on to them.
Nevím jak jsou na tom ostatní ročníky, ale 18y mi přijde málo zajímavý. Není to špatný rum.
I keep all three Kirk and Sweeney rums on the shelf all the time. It seems to be something about Dominican rums. I have never had one I didn’t like. This one is my all time favorite. If I only had one rum to the end of time this is it. There is a distinctive taste of werthers caramel, a delightful toffee and almond back and great heat. Not as spicy as the 23 year Kirk and year. This one hit’s my perfect spot.
A smooth, easy drinking rum at a great price that builds upon the 12 yr. For just a few dollars more there is another level of flavor and smoothness. Hard to pass up and gives the 23 a run for the money.
Enjoyed a glass of Kirk & Sweeney 18y while vacationing in Amsterdam. This is the best of the Kirk & Sweeney range. The 23y is just nasty and the 12y is too young. This 18y comes in an identical very thick bottle, so points for that one. Label design is blah. Color is deep amber. Strong chocolate and banana flavors are both to the nose and palate. Some burn at the end, not too bad.
Rich honey, amber color. Delicate slightly flowery nose.
I love the mouth feel of this rum. It's so well balanced between a bit of sweetness and just the right amount of spice. Nice long finish (slightly spicy) with just a tinge of alcohol. I really like this rum a lot.
Nice nose. You get the sweet with smoothness and once you try it delicious. Very smooth. I get the smoky, candy floral notes. Very easy sipper.
Bought a bottle to try as 23 was out of stock. Had for £44 but the 12 is 40 and the 23 48 all from Amazon so good priced aged rums can't go wrong.
The bottle is amazing looks like something out of the 1800s could easily have been aboard the schooner itself. Popping the cork top aromas of butterscotch, caramel and the Caribbean hit you the smell invites you to pour and sip and it's smoothness is unreal no burn whatsoever just delicious liquid gold.
A very nice rum can't wait to try the 12 and 23 I would say it's smoothness is hard to beat even with higher end bottles such as el dorado 21 at near double the price.
This is my first review on Rum ratings. After having the app on my phone and following reviews for several months it has been long over due. Tonight, I sat to try my first bottle of kirk and sweeney 18 year old. The fantastic quality of this rum has prompted me to review this product. It has a sweet aroma with hints of vanilla and nodes of creamy coffee. The smoothness of taste when poured over a large cube of ice is what I enjoy the most. A very fine rum that has a long lasting gentle warmth. Bottle sourced in the UK on amazon for £44 delivered. 10/10 value for money
Having had tasted all three bottles, I must say none have disappointed me. Whatever the price I shall pay it. I have not been able to purchase K&S at the duty free stores at the Punta Cana airport and no one their seems to have heard of it. Any reason? I am able to purchase it at my local enteco on long island thank god.
I have tried the 12, 18and 25 year olds and like most tasters this has it all.
I only have good to say about this rum. Tried it neat, and I’d never have it any other way. Sweet smoky fragrance. Feels thick on the tongue, smooth, no bite. Just enjoyment. If the 18 is this good, I cannot wait to try the 23.
Excelent rhum, vraiment tres bon, savoureux et doux en bouche
One of the most disappointing rums I have had. I wouldn't say it was the worst rum I've ever had, but it certainly didn't seem a good one either. It seemed very under par for the press and build up it got.
Perhaps the clue is in the price...it's in a fancy bottle (which must be a chunk of the cost), it's supposed to be 18 years old and yet it only costs roughly £45...so maybe £40 for the rum and £5 for the bottle then...maybe even more for that bottle? Most 15 year old rums, let alone 18, cost at least a tenner more than that..hmmm
The nose was vanilla and sugar with a hint of cheap perfume; the taste was sugar and caramel, a subtle hint of violet cream in the background and a strongish alcohol burn that was a little insipid in the act of warming. The afertaste is quickly gone and is vanilla and caramel... and again that sort of cheap perfumey taste - violet, geranium, patchouli...dunno. I have previously only encountered a perfume-like quality in Pink Pigeon...I didn't like that either, but at least it was more fitting in a vanilla spiced rum aimed mainly at ladies.
If I had to sum this up, I'd say it's like a "premium rum" with someone deliberately adding a bland sweetener and sucking out some of the taste to make it as insipid as you can get away with whilst still being able to call it a "premium." I know there are many on here who like this a lot...but more than an other rum I've tried on here, I just don't get it. I can honestly see why some folk rave about Don Papa more than they do about this. The more I drank this, the more I really disliked it. I had to go and drink somethink else after it to remove the taste.
Pusser's, El Dorado, La Hechicera to name but three are several times more interesting. No contest.
