A blast of HEFTY caramel sweetness on the tip of the tongue. Washes to a toffee finish. Notes of caramel on all levels. No other real way to describe it. Very unique. Quite interesting.
Poured neat, it has a nice aroma of chocolate and caramel with a slight tickle of the nose that hints of the 94 proof. The first taste gives you that caramel, with maybe a bit of toffee, but also the oaky spiciness. It does leave behind a bit of oily sweetness, however, that would knock it out of a sipping category. Makes a decent rum and coke, or maybe even a pina colada.
First rum I bought that wasn't some random carriage for mixing. Really smooth and silky dark rum. I did drink it neat. If mixed with coke it got way too sweet in my opinion.
Smooth, sweet and soothing a bit classier than kraken, much cheaper which is a bonus. Love the cola finish and sweetness is just about right especially on a long warm summer evening.
Creamy. Heavy on vanilla. A nice allspice burn. Finishes out with a little kola nut. Surprised me.
I haven't had Kraken in a long time, but since they are adjacent on the shelf, this is what one is supposed to assume, I assume. It is quite good, easy to drink. Even good for sipping. Not as sweet as some of the "candy rums" but fairly well balanced. Almost seems to be geared to getting drunk. Woke up this morning and that seems to be what happened.
I like it. Due to the events of the day, I really needed to unwind. Did that and more.
Dark, sweet, with strong accents of caramel, vanilla and cynamon, this rum is a very fine budget version of Kraken, quite similar in taste and overall flavor.
I actually preferred this one neat rather than mixed. As soon as you crack this one open you detect a moderate maple aroma and hints of vanilla greet your tongue. A decent price for the product as well.
Still not sure what to think of this one.
It's not bad with a coke and is almost like kraken, but just not the same.
Kraken is also not top of the line spiced rum but compared to this one I think I enjoy kraken just a bit more.
Black Magic is not bad but for a spiced rum but it seems to be missing something that makes it stand out of other black spiced rum's.
Familiar spiced rum aromas. A bit harsh neat with a warm and slightly rough edge. Sweet vanilla and caramel confine this to the "with coke " department. I'm a fan so ok for me
This rum attempst to cash in on the Kraken name, it's an okay Black spiced, but the flavor is lacking. I tasted more licorice than vanilla. Not a deal breaker, but nothing to write home about.
I believe everyone that comes across this will see it as a discounted kraken. If you were to do a blind test you would easily be able to differentiate between the two. For price it's really not a bad rum.
I actually prefer Black Magic to The Kraken--way cheaper, and doesn't feel like drinking Dr Pepper mixed with Everclear. This rum is very sweet, with lots of caramel and vanilla. The finish is also much smoother than Kraken. For two-thirds the price, it's a better choice.
I came across this one next to kraken and saw it was cheaper and came with a 2 liter of Coke and a shot glass. So why not? It seemed very similar to kraken but taste and aroma told me they were different. I didn't get swept away with the sweet smell that seeps out of kraken. It indeed had that aroma I pictured potions from Harry Potter would emit. For price taste wasn't that bad. not a kraken but for a black spiced rum I think it was enjoyable.
I open the bottle and the nose was very over powering of sweetness.. similar to butterscotch. The taste was ok, it was smooth in mix, and did its job.. I'm particular to kraken and the taste, but this would do on a airplane ride in crunch time.
Similiar label and advertising, similiar product. Syrupy, very sweet, flavors of vanilla, root beer and chocolate. Aroma is swiss miss hot chocolate. Not great, not awful. Makes a really sweet rum and coke. Not sure what I'm going to do with this bottle.
Very sweet with strong caramel and what I guess could best be described as a very sweet vanilla. Maybe a hint of what reminded me of chocolate candied cherry.
In the mouth, comes on very sweet, very thick and syrupy, and surprisingly very smooth. The spiciness kicks in with some oak on the finish, but still pretty smooth. To me though, it seems the smoothness comes only as the result of sugar.
I tried looking this up on the added sugars list but it isn't on there. I'm guessing based on the sweetness there is a lot of sugar added to this rum. While smooth, unless you are into sipping maple syrup, this rum is too sweet to enjoy except as a mixer. At that it does a pretty decent job. In Coke with a splash of lime juice it did very well. But I'd buy Kraken over this.
