Gorgeous aroma, not harsh at all and it tastes wonderful. Canβt believe itβs such a young rum.
After enjoying the 10 year I was pleasantly surprised by th 5 year old obviously not a smooth. As this rum is made from the sugar can rather than molasses, you get a much great depth of flavor. So although the young expression, I would keep this for sipping, its robust enough to mix but for me it would beca waste.
I had the pleasure of tasting this rum while on the rum tour at the St. Nicholas Abbey distillery. The golden color didn't quite appeal to me, certainly not as much as a dark rum would, but the bottle was very nice and the overall look was attractive. The flavor though was really very good, and was actually quite a bit better than I expected. It's fairly smooth, and has a complex yet rich collection of flavors that confuse and delight you.
I gave it a weighted score of 7.53, which I rounded up to 8 for rumratings.com. My scoring system (with weights) is as follows:
-Packaging (10%): 8
-Color (20%): 5
-Nose (20%): 8
-Palette (25%): 8.5
-Smoothness (25%): 8
Definitely worth a try! It's a decent sipping rum, and I bet would also be a fantastic mixing rum.
Jeg elsker normalt rom fra Barbados, men denne faldt ikke i min smag
There is little doubt that this five year old rum is top notch, beautiful color, clean and crisp taste with a nice finish. Saint Nicholas Abbey imho is one of The greatest producers of rum on the planet. Because of its youthful five years, it obviously is not quite as refined as its older siblings, thus the 8 rating,( probably an 8.5 ) but this is a rum not to be missed, I encourage everyone to broaden their horizons and incorporate this vintage into their collection! Enjoy!
St Nicholas Abbey is an old sugar plantation house turned into a walk-through museum with a great bistro and a lovely gift shop. Worth a visit, in particular as I doubt you can get the rum anywhere else...
Distilled from raw sugar cane juice, not molasses it has been distilled on-site since they acquired a German pot still in 2008. Previously the distillation took place at Foursquare. Ageing takes place in charred American oak casks, previously used - and aged - at Foursquare.

Priding themselves on local craftsmanship for all their preserves and containers, the gorgeous bottles are sandblasted with a picture of the "abbey" and will be refilled at half-price if you bring them back.
In the glass the colour is golden and the aroma is amazingly complex for something this young.
In the mouth it is exceptionally smooth with a deep aroma of dried fruits and nuts that lingers. There are no overpowering vanilla or esther flavours, which can come with a young rum, this is a mature as many other 12 and 15 year olds.
It still has quite a burn to it, but this complements the full taste rather than oppress it.
An outstandingly good rum. I would give it 10, but then there has to be room for the first batch of true St Nicholas 12 year old in a few years' time.
'welcoming with notes of toffee, vanilla, orange peel'

St. Nicholas Abbey rums are very special expressions. Each is made as a single batch and hand-bottled from a single cask, but all are exquisite rums with character and depth. Because their rums are made from sugar cane syrup instead of molasses, they have a slightly more herbal and fruity flavor than other molasses-based Barbados rums. The 5 Year Rum has a subtle sweetness to it, in the form of a light caramel and vanilla from the ex-bourbon barrel in which it was aged. There is also a light peppery spice rounded out with notes of mocha.
