Something for the connoiseur - and also a starter rum for whiskey lovers. I like rhum agricole and even the grassier ones, but it took me a while to get through the dominant smokey whiskey aroma to find my good old HSE again. But there it was, intermingling with the "American Barrels" and pleasing my rum craving palate. Interesting sipping rum, I want to try a Whiskey Sour from it one day! :) Not suited for everyday use, but still good!

The H.S.E. Black Sheriff is an Agricole Rhum from Martinique, which is distilled from sugar cane juice and then stored in bourbon barrels for 3 years, which are burned out again before filling. The rhum is bottled with 41% alcohol. The black bottle is very cool designed.

The rhum is very spicy in the nose. Wood and smoke are swinging along. But also sweetness and clearly the vanilla of the bourbon barrel. When drinking, the rhum is a little more restrained. Predominantly spicy with vanilla and caramel, the rhum is dry on the road. Grassy Agricole notes resonate. But the rhum also shows sharpness. The body is not yet fully formed and the finish could be longer. Oak and toasted caramel notes stuck for some time.

The H.S.E. Black Sheriff is a cool mix of agricole and bourbon. It's special and more for now and then. The Agricole notes are overpainted a little too much by the strong bourbon notes. For about 35 euros it is affordable and for Bourbon fans this rhum could be really interesting. At the Wagemut Tasting at number 4.

I would also like to include its low price in the evaluation of this rum. Why? You won't find much comparable in this low-priced segment.
The nose has a lot of ripe fruit, but also a grassy freshness. Light phenolic notes are also unmistakable. It's pleasant, but not spectacular either.
In the mouth, a clear sharpness is initially noticeable, which is due to the very young age of 3 years.
Hiding behind the spiciness is the typical Agricole, light medicinal notes meet caramelized and fermented fruit. Somewhat earthy with further fruit on the finish.
Compared with older bottlings of HSE and also with their finish, the Sherrif can not compete.
But for a Rhum around 35 euros you get a lot offered.

I couldn't get over how intensely "bourbony" it was. In a blind tasting, I would suspect it to be whiskey, not an agricole. Too much spicy oak, it has subdued the pleasant rum qualities...

It is a good value, a little but not too dry for agricultural rum. The first nose highlights alcohol then come sweeter notes found in whiskey. Fun to fool guests

Rhum correct.

It s really rough, bought it in martinique supermarket just to mix with cola or fruit juices, not a neat sipper...

HSE Black Sheriff is a blend of 3-4 year-old rums aged mainly in American bourbon barrels.
We smell the sugar cane, it’s really smoky and Woody.
The end: You can smell caramel, vanilla and dried fruits.
It’s a dry rum that can be enjoyed on its own or in a cocktail.
Not that bad for a 25€ bottle.
A bit harsh beat.

...nice fruity smell, whiskey-like-rum...yet mild, not really an afterburn.

After all nothing really special or needed in my cabinet, yet a try was worth.

Solid 6.
