Dark brown sugar all the way
This is easily the sweetest unsweetened rum I've tried. Layers upon layers of dark brown sugar, on the nose and on the palate. I really don't get anything else.
Not complicated, but balanced, with just a touch of burn. Reminds me mostly of El Dorado 8 overall, weirdly enough.
I was anticipating a smoother XO, but this seems very different to me. Super easy drinking, but without depth, punch or complexity. At first I was disappointed but over time, it's grown on me.
So far, it tastes like the epitome of column/pot molasses rum. It's not funky, smooth, complex, or any other specific. It just hits the bullseye of what the centre point of what rum can be. I can't imagine anyone truly disliking this, but equally, I'm not enthralled either. Equally, I'll be very surprised if I don't buy this again.
Edit - Coming round to this again after a year or so, and I'm enjoying this more this time.
Still simple, bit of burn, gentle sweetness, but all rum and very enjoyable with it.
Definitely a 7
I've been completely blown away by the quality and value of Doorly's, and for around $25 at Total Wine, nothing beats it for me. Absolutely the best value Barbados rum out there.
Really enjoying this rum. I have been experimenting with trading this one in Tiki drinks. Always fun to swap out rums to see what it does in the drink.
Is one of the best rums I ever drink. Very good Barbados
After trying the 8 year old, i was not completely sold. It was a tat bit mild with no exciting flavors for my taste. The internet said i should try the 12 year version and boy was the internet right. The flavor punch that the 8 years lacked (in my opinion) was exactly what the 12 years had. A massive amount of flavor hits the pallet when you take the first sip. Only downside, the flavor will disappear fast....Time for a refill
Not overwhelming, but light and smooth. Heavy on raisins/currants/figs, slight baking spice
first impression: really strong alcoholic smell, but the the taste differs from that and the alcohol doesn‘t dominate and so it‘s a nacht ce and honest rum from barbados.
This is a step up from the RL Seale 10 and for $24 you can't beet the value for a good sipping rum.
Familiar notes of vanilla and light toffee/caramel.
"An initial hit of sweetness, brown sugar and a little spicy pepper is overtaken by dry oaked flavour and a nice spiced heat. The finish is very smooth and long lasting."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Oh my! An absolute Top Shelf rum for $23. This is insane

This is my first foray into the rums of RL Seale...and oh my what a delight! I bought this bottle for $23 from Total Wines in Georgia in what I now believe to be the deal of the decade. This is an absolutely incredible rum for the price. The nose is wonderfully aromatic with heavy orange and banana notes along vanilla, toffee, and floral essences. The first taste to hit your tongue is bananas with leather and spice. Mid palate, the leather disappears and is replaced by a lovely combination of Banana, vanilla, orange, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The finish is mostly oak with a lovely undertone of caramel. It is definitely on the drier side with no viscosity at all, but it really is wonderful. I never expected a rum with 0 sugar added and a $23 price tag to be so wonderfully complex - and with almost all my favorite flavors to match. A 12 year rum with this flavor complexity and depth at $23 is simply stunning! The only criticism at all is that the aftertaste is so short - I want more of it. Regardless this is now going to become my default rum when I am in the mood for something drier. It is a crying shame that only Total Wine carries this brand. Oh well, at least I live close to one.
*Edit* I am just going to say it: this is the best $25 bottle of rum on the planet. 4 months in and I am bumping this one up to a 10 on the value alone. I have paid twice and much more for far inferiors rums. This is just a slight notch below Foursquare 2007 and I paid $80 for that (Foursquare 2007 is indeed better but not by a whole lot).
Given the price to quality ratio, this is absolutely a 10
