Enjoyed a bottle of Malahat Ginger while in Los Angeles. Pretty nice and sturdy bottle design. High end label design. Reasonably priced at $29. Off-putting yellow color. Clear ginger to your nose and palate mixed with very young rum flavors. Not a neat sipper by any means, but makes a pretty tasty Rum Mule.
This is a very unique rum. Nice Hint of Ginger and is quite tasty in a mixed drink. Good for a Cuban Mule.
Tasted a bit like a ginger liqueur. But I wouldn't drink it as a rum.
Rum cocktails are typically paired with some of the same ingredients: lime, simple syrup, ginger, tropical fruit juice. The Malahat Spirits Company in San Diego decided to take the fine taste of ginger and pair it with rum all in one bottle. This was a very clever and bold decision. Luckily it all worked out well.
The ginger in this spirit is not too overwhelming at all, and in fact it lingers in a good way. If you like the strong bite of ginger, this may not be your cup of tea. If I could make a comparison to describe the bite, it's like Ginger Ale, not Ginger Beer...just enough ginger to keep you interested.
The story goes like this. Three dudes from San Diego, presumably left their jobs, and started this rum and whiskey distillery. They did not cheapen out on the ingredients, equipment or packaging. I have bottle 559 from the first batch. Totally worth the $45, if you want something different and are interested in a hint of ginger.
