Truly a fantastic choice
Gardel 1992/2003 (42%, Fassbind, The Secret Treasures
Barrels #4, #8 & #121, 1401 bottles, Guadeloupe)
Today I have another legend in my glas. The Gardel distillery was closed 1992 and this is maybe their last distillation. The taste reminds me of trinidad rum (medical notes) mixed with Savanna (grains) and Clarendon rum.
Nice complexity at just 42%, the nose is quite intensive, but in the taste the dilution is noticeable.
The taste starty with anise, some burned sugar and a watery expression. After that the taste turns bitter because of tanins and I get grains and mint. In the middle after the rum became warm there are dirty notes like tar, leather and a medical note with mint and orange peels, at the end are again tanins.
The finish starts spicy with medical note again and grains. At the end you get leather and tar, great.
A beautiful rum, without dilution it would be a 10 I think. With this dilution it's still not bad but can not compete with current Velier Last Ward or Caronis in cask strength.
I love the dirty notes in the finish, I think Gardel produced a great rum/rhum.
