Not that much sweetened. Nice earthly scent but the taste... Its similar to that anti-mosquito plug-in repelents - perfumy taste that hides a chemical disaster. Leave this one to teenagers and their experiments. For a similar price buy yourself Mount Gay XO. Or Doorlys etc. In short proper rums, that taste like rums. After tasting this next to MG XO, I was really close to throwing up.
Chocolate milk smell, soft taste, it's a bit nummy, dark tones, tobacco, bitter
I enjoy this good aroma rum. Body of this rum is a little thin. But smooth, not too sweet.
Never get tired.
An old batch of this series. Double-distilled and matured in American oak before a second maturation period in sherry casks.
N- Caramel and stewed fruits, herbal tea with layer of earthiness to keep it authentic. Soft breezy oak, and floral, again touch of feint from this multiple distilled spirits. White raisin, sour plum and dried fruit intertwined. (84/18)
P- Thin body, sweet kiwi, young banana and oak smokes, Easy on palate with touch of dusty oak, which is not a bad thing in this case. (83/18)
F- Medium, plums, clean oak with semi dry finish, touch of bitter sweet herbs. (85/19)
B/B- 84/18, having same issue to term with the low strength that restricted any profound flavours of the rum to come thru.

Very well structured and balanced, wood and full bodied Dominican rum
Smells great, but dull after taste. Makes me wanna try something else.
This was best at Top of the Market in San Diego. A little rough - a lime smoothed it out some.
Smooth Rum, not to strong.. sweet good for a neat drink without ice
Interesting nose with a slight burn. The sip is not diverse and the burn continues beyond the initial taste yet I will stock it, not as a sipper but as a mixer. Coke, ginger ale, citrus all created a wonderful flavor well beyond the normal mixer.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I finally came around and bought a bottle of this when I saw it for a good price in the classic blue box/bottle combo which has now been discontinued. Its definitively Dominican rum with the same grassy/tropical dew backbone as rums like Kirk&Sweeney or Ron Matusalem. With that said I really disliked K&S 12 and really liked Matusalem 18 so Im only referring to a familiarity and not the whole taste. To compare, Brugal takes that grassy flavor and balances it out as not to be bitter or cloying the way it is in all the K&S rums IMO while being less sweet with a similar smoothness to Matusalem. 1888 has some delicate bourbon, vanilla, brown suagar, and sherry flavors with a tiny bit of spice at the end. Its very easy drinking and more dry than sweet. Dont expect this to blow you away but it is a nice "sipper",which remember, doesnt always mean sweet! Update: 2nd bottle and it's the new one with the black wax over the cork. I like it even better this time around but that doesn't mean that the rum has changed, more likely my palate has changed. I am more used to the Domincan "tropical breeze" backbone of this rum and can therefore appreciate the flavors from the aging more. Creamy and one of the smoothest ever.
