My first rum from Dom. Rep. today :-). >Age is a secret, with sherry cask finish.
Nose : alcoholically, oak, smoke
Palate : oak in front, dark chocolate, an initial little sweetness gives way to bitterness. Hmm, not really tasteful. Not really nice. I miss the fruit from the sherry cask finish.
Put an ice cube in the glass. Caramell an honey are coming through. A little sweeter now and bettter than neat.
Finish : medium, salty and sweet notes from caramell and honey at once.
Conclusion : I don't konw if I should like him. Price round 30 Euro is okay but the taste is a little special and the finish doesn't scream loudly for another sip.
Насочено е към любителите на уиски. Не е толкова сладко, като други ромове, а е и отлежало в любимите ми шери бъчви.
Let's start off with the obvious, this is not a sweet run by any means and as others have posted below this follows more the characteristics of a Spanish or Cuban rum. This is an easy zipper with notes of cocoa powder and toasted tobacco, while there are characteristics of sweetness there, they present more as flavor notes less so leading players. I enjoyed sipping this over ice during a meal less so after one as this is not a dessert.
Nose is caramel and you get it on the tongue…then oaky and dry within the sweetness.
Good, not great. I may be incredibly biased on this one because when I tried it I was tasting it next to the Brugal Leyenda, which is not a fair comparison. Great mixing rum, but not worth the price tag over the Extra Viejo.
i am honestly a little bit disappointed in this rum its very light to taste easy to drink a little sweet has an experience rum drinker I won't buy it again but for people who are beginners it would be a fantastic rum since its very easy to drink
This is a little more on the dry side than I normally like. Soft on the tongue, oaky with some tannin. Slightly smooth and good neat or on the rocks.
Great flavor, not too sweet, balanced. Great neat, or on a coconut water ice cube, or a rum old fashioned. It would benefit from bottling at a higher proof. Brugal rum is great 👍.
Smooth and particular taste... It's gonna make our evening. Nice!
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

A nice deep, dark amber color...almost a burnt orange. An aroma that isn't unpleasant. I can't put my finger on what it is however. I read somewhere that Brugal aims this rum for whiskey lovers and maybe that's why I'm not partial to it. I do not care for whiskey. Never developed a taste for the stuff. Same goes for Scotch and Bourbon (my Scottish ancestry may disown me and make me turn in my kilt). It has a major oak flavor to it that borders on unpleasant bitterness. It almost overrides a nice toffee sweetness (which is its saving grace in my humble opinion). After finding the Brugal Anejo delightful but the Brugal Extra Viejo disappointing (and that's being kind) I didn't know what to expect with the 1888. I was hoping for something spectacular but was disappointed. I had high hopes but they just weren't quite met. Honestly speaking, it's not a bad rum but for the price I would expect something much better. As it stands I cannot recommend this rum due to the quality not meriting the price it commands. There are rums of similar price that are far superior to the Brugal 1888 and even several rums less expensive that are superior to the Brugal 1888.
Can't win 'em all.
[ADDENDUM: Does play well with Coke Zero so I'm bumping it up a point.]
