Caroni 1994 from Trinidad and Tobago maybe the best rum !!! Real power .

NR: Great nose, but diluted taste

This rum was released in 2011, with around 7000 bottles. Back then, the bottle cost around € 100 because Caroni wasn't in great demand. The rum was tropical aged for 17 years, mainly in Trinidad. Why it was bottled at 52% is unclear, but there is also a full proof version.
Smell: Heavy, fruity and dirty aromas escapes from the glass. This dirty character reminds me of dirty SBS bottlings, the fruity part of the 1996 bottlings. There's tar, wood varnish, and black currant. In the background is leather, dark dried fruit and wood aromas. Deeper in the glass is bicycle innertube and smoky aromas. A great smell that I really like.
Taste: It starts out quite diluted and slightly sweet with burnt sugar, the wood varnish takes over the taste, tannins are rising immediately and add their bitter notes. As the rum gets warmer in the mouth, the leather dominates the palet. Some black currant comes out before the finish occurs. The finish is characterized by leather and tannins, the currant comes out again in the back.
Aftertaste: wood varnish, tannins, tar, black currant
The rum was really great in the nose, although it wasn't particularly complex, I was impressed with its combination of dirty and fruity notes. It was a bit disappointing on the palate, the 52% were poorly chosen. There wasn't much left of the intensity that was conveyed in the nose. For € 100 a bottle it was still a great rum in 2011.
