Truly a fantastic choice
This rum was reduced from 61% to 57% because it supposedly had the best aroma development at this strength.
Smell: A well-known Jamaica smell pours into my nose. It is caramel-like and sweet with a lot of leather, orange zest and dried fruits. Seems very flowery to me and is very reminiscent of EMB 2010 from Velier. Old wood with tannins and vanilla is also present. It's a bit sharp and stings in the nose. Earthy barrel aromas can be discovered deeper in the glass.
Taste: The rum starts off sweetly with caramel, the dried fruits and orange zest. It increases in spice very quickly and then delivers the heavy aromas such as leather, wood, barrel aromas. It also develops some tannins and tingles a bit on the tongue. Vanilla is added to the wood with the spiciness and the orange zests are rising. The finish is sharp with wood, tannins and orange zests. Towards the back, the dried fruits are very present and some spices such as cloves appear. The leather is of course also included.
Aftertaste: orange zest, wood, leather, vanilla, mint
Conclusion: A rum that comes very close to Monymusk. In a blind tasting, I would have put it in this corner as well. It has no particular unique character, the distillery character is not recognizable to me. I like the profile and its ripe flavors. A great rum for me, but with the profile I would choose the cheaper alternatives.
