Tasty, but not quite great
After giving the Angostura 5-year a "7" I feel a "7" is applicable to the Angostura 7-year rum. However consider it more of a 7 for the 5-year and a little over a 7.5 for the 7-year. It's just a tad bit better.
It has a slightly darker amber color as compared to its younger sibling and has a more appealing aroma. Its flavor has that oak tones from the barrels in which it was aged. However the extra aging has caused it to cross over the line, albeit barely, into sipping territory. Definitely smoother with the vanilla and caramel tones as well as butteriness element. There some spiciness to it as well. Doesn't have as much of a burn as its younger sibling.
A very versatile rum enjoyable in mixed drinks, colas, on the rock, and even straight up.
For the price I got this bottle, I can get better value. As a sipper try the 1919. As a mixer there are better ones for a lower price. All in all I don't see a market for this bottle.
While not approaching the 1824 and 1919 expressions, the 7 years old is a fine everyday sipper on ice.
Not overly bold, there are some mellow burnt sugar, spice and marshmallow notes present with a warm creme brûlée finishing off the taste.
I will definitely keep this stocked in my person shelf - especially as a trainer for those beginning to appreciate sipping rum rather than guzzling it.
This rum has a very spicey nose with a little bit of hidden sweetness. It has a leathery flavor with hints of tabacco and a present afterburn. Not terrible, but not great either.
Angostura 7 year from Trinidad. This issue of Rum first born in 2006 is a wonderful mid brown, hinting at a possible sweetness. The nose of this Rum is rich in orange, lemon and a bit earthy, perhaps even musty. The first hint in the mouth is sweet, honey sweet, delivering on the promise promoted by the color. In the mouth, it’s smooth and rich with an oakey, honey flavor, notes of chocolate are present. The citrus is now missing. The finish is a bit rougher. It does have some heat, not overwhelming or punishing, just noticeable. The full finish is nice with a return of the citrus notes. A great aftertaste. 9 out of 10, served neat, would be a shame to mix it with anything.
Angostura 7-years, produced in Trinidad & Tobago has matured in bourbon barrels. It has a rich color, very appealing. It had nothing special in the nose; it's quite soft, there is some honey and the spices are well balanced. Due to the ageing in bourbon barrels, the taste starts with a round, sweet taste and afterwards a little bitterness takes over. Its flavor combination is almost like a well-balanced tiramisu. This rum is different than average rums, but it's tasty. The bitterness, like dark chocolate or very dark caramel, is existing quite long in the aftertase. Concluding, very average in the nose but appealing in the taste.
