Velier Full Proof 1996 Trespassers Caroni 20 years

A 1996 Caroni nicknamed Trespassers, he got it because of the photo.
A blend of 11 barrels from which 3038 bottles were filled. It matured in Trinidad for 20 years and has a cask strength of 70.1%.
You shouldn't take too much time with it, because the longer it stays in the glass, the woodier it becomes. I would recommend not to let it sit for too long. 30 or 45 minutes are sufficient.

Smell: A sweet and heavy nose escapes from the glass. He's strong and bites in the nose with sharpness. I smell a combination of burnt sugar, raisins, cranberries, heavy barrel aromas and tar. An amazing start. Orange zest give the rum a flowery smell. Leather notes add more complexity, bourbon barrel flavors are still noticeable. Rubber is not noticeable for me, possibly some rubber is embedded in the barrel aromas.
It's great, it comes close to the Kirsch Caroni, but it's more dirty.

Taste: sweet start with cranberries, burnt sugar and tar. It becomes sharp and develops very dirty. Tar is getting more and more intense, car tires appear. Some wood from the bourbon barrel with bitterness of tannins develops. It gets really bitter.
This is the perfect representation of a dirty caroni. He dances on the palate for a while with a distinct sharpness.
Later the sharpness decreases, the bitterness of tannins decreases also, tar and earthy barrel aromas remain. There are again bright woody notes and the bitterness of tannins.
The finish is so long that it practically merges into the aftertaste.

Aftertaste: tar, dried cranberries, some tannins or earthy barrel aromas, mint

This is a really great caroni. It is much dirtier than the Kirsch Caroni. It's also a little less complex, but it represents the distillery in an excellent way. Maybe it is because it was allowed to mature in Trinidad all the time.
For me this is one of the best blenden Caronis ever.
