NR: One, if not the best Caroni

A single case caroni from barrel # 5623 with 298 bottles.
Smell: A well known 1996 smell escapes from the glass, with deep sweetness of burnt sugar, wood and heavy aromas of wood varnish with leather. It's not as dirty as I imagined and very aromatic.
Dried fruits with a slight honey sweetness can be noticed, which reminds me of an Enmore. I also notice orange zest that make the rum more flowery, which reminds me of another Demerara, the SVW. Above all flavors is a layer of some typical caroni aromas, a little tar, no or hardly any gum.
There are also barrel aromas from the bourbon barrel with the corresponding vanilla. It's unusual that you can even smell it, I mean it's a Caroni.
It's really so balanced and harmonious that I could think it's a Demerara. Possibly this has to do with the fact that it was matured in Guyana from 2008 onwards.
Taste: It doesn't start out quite as sweetly as the nose promises. Slightly sweet start with some caramel notes, dried fruits (cranberries / raisins) and wood aromas that transform into the dirty aromas of tar and gum. The rum increases in spiciness. The taste changes first in the medical direction with some bourbon and wood aromas with vanilla. Then the development continues in the bitter direction and the tannins with oak are rising.
The finish is slightly spicy with tar, some gum, leather, tannins, oak and vanilla. Such a finish is naturally intense and long. The taste notes stay longer on the palate.
Aftertaste: Some tannins, tar, some sweet caramel notes and dried fruits (cranberries)
This is a complex caroni that presents itself from different sides. First there is the sweet, tasty start. Then the dirty phase that is slightly reminiscent of TDL. A very woody and tannin-heavy, overripe phase where it appears too old. And then the very ripe and dirty finish. Not to be neglected is the aftertaste, made of dried fruits and tar, which I really appreciate.
Overall, a very refined caroni, which is even more seductive in terms of smell than on the palate. The question that arises here is whether it wasn't even better a few years earlier.
I would give it 97 points. If it were the same on the palate as it was on the nose, I would probably have awarded two more points.
