Update: So I purchased a bottle after seeing it on sale. Took it home, tasted it... hated it. Loads of artificial vanilla and some unwelcome cherry cola flavor. Thought it might still work as a mixer. Nope... resulted in the worst Planter's Punch I've ever made. I used some in a punch and gave the rest to a friend.

I'm not sure how I got the original review so wrong. Maybe the recipe changed? Maybe it was just an off day for me? In any case, I do not recommend this bottle unless it really is your only option for a Jamaican. Even then, I'm not sure I would pick it up again. Get Coruba instead, if you can. Even Myers's is better than this. And obviously, a rum like Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still, Xaymaca, Doctor Bird, Mezan, or S&C will just hit it out of the park. It seems Blackwell is made strictly for cola, not cocktails.

4+/5- for my palate, could be a 6 for others

Original:

40%. Not super dark. Warm, caramel-y nose. Hint of funk. Similar to Coruba or Appleton. Sweet entry. Good youthful bite. Slight bitterness. Medium, warming finish.

Not bad. If this was the only dark Jamaican mixer I had access to, I wouldn't be upset. Probably makes a tasty Planter's Punch. Fortunately for me, I have access to many (including ones that are funkier, drier, stronger, more refined, or some combination of the four), and this one lands a few bottles down the list. As the label says, it's "fine" :).

7-ish

Strong coconut. A little funk. Better than Coruba for a cheap Jamaican black.

Bought this bottle to make a specific drink (Jamaican Rum Punch) and I’ve found this one to be a serviceable mixer in several different cocktails, even rivaling Goslings in a certain combination with ginger beer.

Tasting stand-alone reveal this one isn’t up to sipper quality. I think it’s slightly spiced and there’s a bitter aftertaste. It’s got unpalatable but anyone used to sipping more expensive stuff isn’t really going to appreciate this one.

I think what’s notable to me is the lack of Jamaican funk. As a big fan of funkier Jamaican rums, some the reviews I’ve read of this one suggested there might be more going on here than I ultimately found. I can’t decide if this rum is mediocre or if I’m just disappointed it’s not more funky.

I first found this while on one of my trips to Kingston and brought some home. Finally my local independent store started carrying it so there are always several bottles on my shelf!

Našťastie žiadne rušivé a nepríjemné pachy tu neevidujem, dominuje sladké drievko, zázvor, oriešky, koža, drevo a horká čokoláda, možno trochu zemitosť. Nevyrazil mi dych, no za tú cenu dostane človek slušnú hodnotu. Vyvážený každodenný rum, ktorý sa určite dá piť aj samotný, nielen mixed, ako odporúčajú v iných recenziách. Za mňa rating 6,5 - 7.

Very good every day rum, smooth, sweet, no woodiness, slight spice and a caramel flavour, quite a step up from the likes of Lambs, Cockspur, Captain Morgan etc. Hopefully i will be able to compare with the likes of Myers or Skipper soon.

This brings a lot to the table, especially for the price point! The nose and taste are very similar… notes of coffee, vanilla, and hints of tobacco or is that the solid hogo it brings?!? This is an excellent darker rum and brings the funk!

Has all the flavors of a dark rum just too much of an alcohol finish.

Tasted this in Jamaica and thought it was good enough to bring home.

Picked this bottle up online because I was looking for a different Dark Jamaican rum than the usual Myers's or Appleton 12 (we don't have Coruba in Holland). This is indeed a very dark rum but without the rich funky nose that the Jamaican rums are known for. This rum is sweet with strong hints of coffee bean, chocolate and toffee. Great in tropical cocktails like a Jungle Bird or Planter's Punch but also very decent went drunk neat. Blackwell is aged for two years and I wouldn't be surprised that they did a little caramel coloring. That's why I think a 7 is high enough.
