Today I have something special in the glas. This one is a 16y old Demerara rum finished in a Caroni cask #R2002. Could be one from Velier. I don't know the mark of Demerara right now, but I think I could name one from the taste.
After around 40min in the glas I get some dirty and fruity notes with black forest bacon. Very tasty umami nose. There is leather, tar and some bacon but also some bright fruity aromas like in a Port Mourant rum. That's melon, honey, white oak with heavy notes of wood varnish.
This is a complex and heavy nose with bright, fruity flavours I would say. It reminds me of the Velier Old Navy rum. This is a very good composition, great nose.
The inital taste belongs clearly to Caroni. The influence is very strong.
The rum starts dry and strong with leather, then became immediately more dirty with gum (tires) and I get also some salty notes of olives. Some tannins are rising from the background and became very peresent.
In the middle I still get the tires first. If I wouldn't know better I would say it's a Caroni :)
Influence of gum turns into leather after some seconds. After the leather the taste turns brighter and I get some sour Demerara PM notes with melon, prune aroma and white oak. At the end the leather again became very present and intensive.
The finish is a little bit spicy, I get leather again, then honey with melon aroma, some white oak and mint.
The aftertaste is tasty and dirty. First the dirty notes are present like gum and leather.
Then I notice the honey, with melon and white oak. Mint is spreading everywhere in the mouth.
What I got here is a very good Caroni with some Demerara influence. It's not the other way around.
I like this one more than the Velier old navy rum.
If you can't afford a good Caroni try this one, I couldn't imagine that a PM with Caroni influence would became that dirty.
I would rate this rum with 92 points.
