I had this rum yesterday at German 10. Rumfestival in Berlin. It tastes good and the higher abv helps a lot to improve the taste. Finishes sweet but not the good way. Nothing that would bother unexperienced drinkers but something that conossieurs would not appreciate. When i finished drinking i went back to the stand and asked for some details about you know how this rum is made and where exactly it comes from. Unfortunately the person just has read some marketing "information" from her paper. I dont want to tell the details here but i think it is really bad not beeing able to provide detailed information about the product. Especially since Malecon is marketed against other high quality products. There is no way i can rate it higher than an 8. And im not sure whether 8 is probably to high.

This really did make me say wow. Great rum. Vanilla, chocolate, coconut, pineapple, banana and some sultanas with dark seville oranges. It's easily one of the best rums I've tasted so far. Highly recommended. Ps.: I am not sure what the guy who rated this 3 out of 10 was on but what I can say is that he defintely has 0 idea about this rum.

I had high hopes, but very disappointed. Hard to taste the rum past the syrupy sweetness. Could use for cooking but not at the price per bottle.

Malecon Rare Proof series is one of my favorites when it comes to Latin styled rum.
Tasted this one together with the 1996 version just to see if it had changed in any way.
They are more or less very similar, but this one (1999 version) is sweeter and less powerful all the way from nose, to palate and finish.
So I have to degrade it from 9+ which was my rating of the 1996 version to 8+ for the 1999 version.
Picture: Bottles of the 1996 and the 1999 versions during the tasting.

This Rum is a lot Taste in your Mouth.
Starts with a good part of Sweetness and Pepper . Not very complex but hold the taste very long and gentle .

I like the Malecon 18, which is 40% ABV, sweet but with the sweetness being well integrated and at least in balance with the other flavors.

The 18-year-old is my benchmark; from a 20-year-old "rare proof" version I expect more.

+ more intense flavors; vanilla, spices, coffee, tobacco, ...
- all overpowered by a syrupy sweetness

There appear to be so nicely balanced intense flavors...it's a shame it's all covered by a sugar blanket.

I cannot enjoy this rum. Even a Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is more palatable, to me.
That's why I cannot rate this higher than "Flawed with a glimmer of hope." The glimmer of hope being that the eventually might decide to not sugar it up. It easily could be a good / fantastic choice without the sugar coating, I expect.

This is AWESOME. Nose of smoke, oak and vanilla. Smoothest bite for an ovenproof ever. Entry is full and chewy with nutmeg and cherry. Then vanilla and oak develop. Molasses and brown sugar slide across the pallet followed by a long smoldering almond and cherry finish. The ovenproof is almost unnoticeable. But the punch is there. It's a velvet glove to be sure. Not too sweet. Amazingly complex. Exquisitely balanced. Beautiful rum.
