This is one of my favorites to use in making Dark and Stormies. We always kept a bottle on the boat.
Wooden taste, very dry. May be good for those, who like whisky.
No real special taste. I was hoping for even a bit more smokey and oak. Instead there isa long peppery aftertaste. But nothing particular interesting
Lidt for sprittet til min smag, dog en rom man sagtens kan have i samlingen.
Un nez sur le caramel qui annonce une certaine douceur. Étonnement, on ne retrouve pas cette douceuren bouche. ce rhum est assez complet et savoureux. Assez sec. A découvrir!
I'm guessing the only reason i've not bought this before is all the "tastes like Bourbon" comments on this rum. not being a Bourbon fan i was skeptical about my purchase.. well i was very pleasantly surprised. Lovely aroma of vanilla , oak , spices and either honey or fruit. Only slightly astringent and that disappeared in moments. Nice to sip , thankfully not much of the Bourbon taste present to spoil my enjoyment !
Mixes very well with a Fever Tree cola also.. Comes with a nice cork and not a cheap screw cap..
Another high quality Barbados rum , only just behind the XO in my opinion... don.t let the "Bourbon" comments put you off !!
Very good tasting. Smooth with a hint of bourbon. Purchased from Wine Country at $19.50. Very good buy.
This rum is close to whiskey. Not the complexity of other rums. Basic taste, not sweet, strong afterburn. Better on ice.
this rum is decent, I preferred it in a high end rum n cokeneat, not so much.
Even though I love the Bajan rum (love the Four Square Brand) this bottle isn't quite there for drinking as a sipper but is very nice as a mixer. Nothing great but definitely a good go to for Tiki drinks or something similar.
A nice balanced Bajan nose with a little extra spicy kick to it.
"Sipped the Black Barrel certainly gives some of the oaky notes of a bourbon but also makes the mouth water."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Great on the nose, not so great in the mouth

Edit: Did a Masterclass with Mount Gay ambassador, Mr Chester Browne, who was really fabulous and a great man. Had this one in the tasting but I think that there was a lot of flavours with my nose (cinnamon, pepper, vanilla) but in my mouth I was disappointed. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I felt betrayed by those promises made to my nose. So that's why I gave it a 6 and not a 7.
Almost a year later I decided to buy myself this bottle to give it another chance, and damn I'm so thankful that I did that. The promises made to my nose were respected. The problem at the masterclass was that this rum stayed in the glass for an hour, and that was maybe good for the xo and the 1703, but was a killer for this one. Spicy, almost funky, it still does have a special taste that leaves a smile on your face as his bigger brothers do, just wanting some more. Mount Gay does it right. Solid 8.
