Mount Gay Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted rum recently created by master distiller Allen Smith. It is a blend of both matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates which are finished in Bourbon oak barrels. The unique blend delivers a bold and balanced flavour.
Anyone who reads my blog will know that I'm not the greatest mount gay fan , however this is an exemption delicious as a rum and coke and lovely delicate notes ... Not strong in flavour but everything you want from a mixer rum with caramel and spices... The best rum and coke money can buy
After pouring I could smell mostly bananas with some oak and pineapple hints. It's a good rum but unfortunately after first sip feels too harsh and lasts long. Slightly sweet.
It doesn't have the smoothness or flavour profile of many more expensive rums but then again it's not as expensive! And for what it costs, I think it's a great rum... I personally find it slightly too harsh to drink without ice but once a couple of ice cubes have started to melt it goes down a treat.
I first tried this rum 4 years ago and found it a solid 9. Last year and the year before, I found the taste had changed in that it was a more harsh drink.....so for "on the ice" rather than straight.
not too sweet but with vanilla taste , an interesting rum
Simple. No additives, but it is a light, simple rum.
Honey coloured amber in the glass.
In the nose caramel and vanilla with beautiful wood nuances, fruits and berries decorate the whole.
On the palate fruity light, toasted wood with caramel, freshly picked tropical fruits.
In the finish discreet, some wood, fruits and caramel.
A nice unsweetened rum for beginners and advanced with a good quality/price ratio.
Packaged in an awesome bottle hiding away the flavours and smells of Barbados' sunshine!
Soft aroma of molasses with hints of sweetness and vanilla. Pepper. Alcohol. Warm on the palate, soft sweet character with soft fruitiness and hints of vanilla and oak. I don't get the big char barrel character that some get. The finish is dry and long with lingering bitterness. Not super complex. Good flavor. I'd use it as a mixer. Great pure rum flavor without too much barrel character to get in the way. Not a great sipper in my book but on the rocks in a pinch wouldn't be a bad thing. A great rum for what it is. Good value for a good quality rum. $26 for a 750ml in Ohio.
Just discovered this one tonight and was surprised about the great taste. Need to buy myself this one to enjoy it more.
This rum is great as a mixer. I use it with mexican coke when I don’t want to spend money on alcohol. Its definitely a step up from mount gay eclipse
This one has a little edgy alcoholic taste to drink straight, but a little pricey to mix. still a good rum if you can get it a good price
The alcohol smell and taste was just a little more than I apreciate. But in general it is good room and I'll get back to it
My first purchase based on reviews from this site. I was tossing up between this and Bundy Small Batch. Regretting my decision to choose this a little. It may grow on me but at the moment the original seems to be a better drop.
Rum má nápadně lihové aroma i chuť, obojí připomíná spíš whiskey než rum.
Nose: Oak hints of vanilla
Taste: Strong oak with nut and vanilla
Viscosity: Somewhat thin
Finish: Finishes fairly quick with a fair amount of burn
Overall Impression: Very good, you cannot go wrong with this rum
Being a "Spirits" drinker I do not claim expertise on any type of alcohol. I very much enjoy Mount Gay Black Barrel when I desire a rum cocktail.
It's not quite the XO, so I'd recommend paying a little more if you're looking for a neat sipper in the style of aged scotch, etc. A little harsher on the palate, this would be an excellent bar choice for any recipe calling for an aged bajan rum.
Very whiskey like. Not very sweet, strong oak. It’ll do if I had to, but nothing special.
Smagt til romhattens romfestival 2019. Den får en 3'er.
A clear step up from the Eclipse with a slight smokey taste.
This is sort of ok but its not nearly as good as the XO which i like quite a bit. I would get XO over this any day.
Vanilla, alcohol, molasses, woody finish lingers on in the back of my throat.
When at a US bar with a limited rum selection this is certainly worth trying. However if more aged rums are available it's only mediocre.
It's not the smoothest, but it has a great, complex flavour, can be drunk neat or goes well in most cocktails and generally under £30 a bottle, it's an excellent "filler" rum to have when you don't want to bring out the fancy stuff.
