Barbados | Aged | 43% ABV | Pot and Column Still Distilled
Mount Gay Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted rum created by master distiller Allen Smith. It is a blend of both matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates which are finished in Bourbon oak barrels.

I don't like my rum all bourboned up like this.
It was a lovely Mt. Gay rum that they ruined by finishing in bourbon casks.
With that said, I've enjoyed it in place of my usual Barbados rums.
Decent Corn n' oil.
This I had at a steakhouse in Houston. It wasn’t terrible but was in my opinion completely overhyped. Little to no taste except for alcohol, which I like my rum to have a little flavor.
Après un premier essai m'ayant laissé dubitatif, une deuxième dégustation m'a fait découvrir un rhum riche en saveur.
The standard daily rum for mixing and on the rocks. It’s smooth and priced well. Also very accessible!
Initial smell wasn’t very good - chemical/alcohol. Then I’m thinking … oh no. But then I sipped. I’m an advanced intermediate rum drinker - by no means an expert.
I could taste the caramel immediately, but in a good way. To me, it’s not as sweet as Diplomatico Reserva. Reminded me of Brach’s caramel candy squares I used to eat as a kid.
No burn, no bad after taste. And after a few great sips, I smelled again and could cleanly smell caramel.
I can’t wait to taste the “better” Dictador’s. But I will say that this was a fine introduction. I look forward to sipping XO.
But in the meantime, I’m going to enjoy the rest of the bottle. For $25 US, I’d say it is one hell of a rum. I’m kinda sad that it was the last bottle at TWN & they didn’t have a label on the shelf, so it was the last bottle :(
Can’t believe that the coffee and orange bottles were a higher price. I definitely recommend giving it a try!
Pour moi le meilleur de la gamme.
Rhum puissant et boisé
The bourbon touch is definitely there, making it a smooth woody rum, easy to drink and great value for money.
Light and smooth. Sugary sweetness up front. Burn in the back, a little unexpected. Barrel flavor comes through without being overwhelming. Slightly complex but nothing phenomenal.
Bought a bottle of this. Took it round to friends. Didn't get to sampling much of it, but enough to be satisfied I tried it, but happy not to buy it again.
Wasn't much of an upgrade on the Eclipse, still young and undeveloped, although easy to drink. The char adding something but not enough to elevate it's overall character. Too muted in flavour for me, and for the money, I'd say RL Seale or El Dorado 12 have more depth and interest.
A nice balanced Bajan nose with a little extra spicy kick to it.
"Sipped the Black Barrel certainly gives some of the oaky notes of a bourbon but also makes the mouth water."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Very Good Mixer

A lot of raw alcohol in the nose and that translates to a strong afterburn. Nice initial taste but the burn keeps it from being a sipper. As a mixer that burn disappears the flavors come out in a wonderful way. Really enjoyed it with citrus so will keep it around though not the main go to.
