Mount Gay Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted rum recently created by master distiller Allen Smith. It is a blend of both matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates which are finished in Bourbon oak barrels. The unique blend delivers a bold and balanced flavour.
Another good one from Mount Gay
like the XO better but still a good
J'aime !
For me a rum should be at least a bit sweet. That's not the case at all with this one. For a price more than Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva or Presidente Marti 15 this was really a bummer. Maybe bourbon or ordinary whisky drinkers will like this.
Woody, sweet rum. I drunk a few last night and really enjoyed it!
This is the latest one in my collection yet. It's very tasteful although the taste is strong. For someone who like Pyrat and Don Papa (very flavoured rums) just like me this is something completely different. But I'm getting used to the taste quickly.
I review this about a year after finishing it on holiday. If the XO is available then spend the extra money! This isn't really close and is only verging on being an acceptable sipper. It's by no means bad, but its is very much a reserve rum that will keep you going if nothing better is available.
Black barrel element is surely strong and because of it this really reminds me of a moderate whisky. Someone might like it, but next time I will be in the mood for whisky, I will buy whisky.
This is a medium-dark rum with very nice taste qualities, perhaps a little frustrating as it's not the best for sipping, though it avoids the heavy molasses qualities of many dark rums. I use it as top-off or for creating some mixed rums, and I find it combines well with some light rums like Cruzan Light (I will use it this way in a dry mojito), and to bring up the overall flavor particularly last-minute when you've run out of better rums. It's still a little expensive but I like it much more than the slightly less expensive Mount Gay offerings. Overall I think it's a worthwhile general rum to keep on your bar-shelf even if you don't use it as an everyday rum.
okay, but nothing special. After first or second drink, I left it on the shelf for mixing.
Limited Single Barrel Private Barrel From The Party Source in Ky, Oak upon chard Oak upon charred oak. a decent sipping rum that can replace an ok bourbon but not a good scotch. wouldnt bother mixing this one
This rum has it all, the good 'old' pirate smell and taste.
Not that great for sipping to me. Excellent for mixology.
not exactly my taste as it is a bit stronger than I would expect.
Forgot to take some rum on holiday with me so I picked this up in Duty Free and it was actually pretty reasonable, just smooth enough to drink on it own but actually this one I preferred with Diet Coke.
This was ok but a little bland. Perhaps would be better taken straight
I was really expecting much of this rum. It has a great taste but I find it too much banana. It's good in the beginning, but near the end it's getting a bit dull.
Not a big fan of this one. Quite strong, bit too harsh to my taste.
Of rums I've tried this is the least rum tasting one. It's not my favourite and is at back of drink selections. Not sure what is going on with this one!
A review mentioned bourbon and I completely agree that it reminds me a lot of bourbon. Wouldnt drink it straight up. Mixed 50/50 with cola and some lime or lemon is perfect with this rum.
If you have a sweet tooth or a delicate palate / weak stomach, you might find this a bit harsh. Whisky drinkers (like me, although I prefer rum) will like this. It's dry, it's oakey, it has some burn and it's relatively high on alchohol-content at 43%. It's the kind of rum that likes to flex its muscles. There is a caramel sweetness hidden in there, but you'll have to look for it. Pleasant though, when you eventually find it.
This would be a rum to show whiskey drinkers. Excellent for the price point, good for a sipper that you don't mind accidentally killing with a few friends on a sat night.
