Mount Gay Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted rum recently created by master distiller Allen Smith. It is a blend of both matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates which are finished in Bourbon oak barrels. The unique blend delivers a bold and balanced flavour.
In the bajan range, this leans a bit towards the potent end of the scale. It's by no means overpowering but have some character. The nose is nice with cherries, dark chocolate.and perhaps a splash of saltwater? On the tongue I pick up notes of molasses, peppery spices, toast and peach. The finish is slightly dry, deep and dark, but stays fairly refined. Good rum and decent value.
Could this be the best bang for your buck? For nearly half the price it offers no less from the XO qualities and even adds a little on top of that. It's lacking those lovely floral tones of XO, but it also lacks that sometimes unpleasant alcohol bite. Even people who aren't very fond of the XO really likes this rum, and I can imagine drinking this and only this whole night. This is truly good all-purpose rum.
Mt. Gay makes some of my favourite rums but, this isn't one of them. It is overpowered by a bourbon flavour that I can't ignore. If I want bourbon I'll go get it. I don't mind it in rum when it is subtle but, this is very similar in taste to some bourbons I drink. Smooth drinking and taste is good but, not for a rum.
This is all preference anyway but, the Eclipse red cap is my go to mixer and I feel it's a more rounded rum.
Smells and tastes of honey, oak, bourbon, and spice. The taste has a strong alcohol bite to it; perhaps a little too strong at 43%abv, so I'll recommend this on the rocks (I like stronger drinks only when they are super premium). Still, a good above average rum.
Very whiskey like. Not very sweet, strong oak. It’ll do if I had to, but nothing special.
Smagt til romhattens romfestival 2019. Den får en 3'er.
A clear step up from the Eclipse with a slight smokey taste.
This is sort of ok but its not nearly as good as the XO which i like quite a bit. I would get XO over this any day.
Vanilla, alcohol, molasses, woody finish lingers on in the back of my throat.
When at a US bar with a limited rum selection this is certainly worth trying. However if more aged rums are available it's only mediocre.
It's not the smoothest, but it has a great, complex flavour, can be drunk neat or goes well in most cocktails and generally under £30 a bottle, it's an excellent "filler" rum to have when you don't want to bring out the fancy stuff.
Nice English style rum, dark, strong, strong notes of the bourbon casks they riped in. Not syruppy. Not to strong on the nose, nice little burn in the throat. Short aftertaste. Like it more with some ice.
One of the basic rums. It is very easy to drink and good value for money.
Very over-priced for the quality (bland!) , I have had several tastier rums for less money. Doesn't hold a candle for Kraken 94, Cruzan Black Strap, Cap Morgan Private Stock, or Plantation 5-year. I wanted to like it too, because I'm gay LOL.
Coco and herbal notes are predominant in this rum that is can be a sipper at a very affordable price point. Great for bourbon drinkers.
Nice taste of Ron. Is very smooth not sharp. Nice smell. Ron is good to. Drink with anything. Thx
Surprisingly good rum. Has stronger taste than other rums,(no so sweet). Smells and tastes of honey, oak, bourbon. Yes i like!
I recommend to taste.
A lot of raw alcohol in the nose and that translates to a strong afterburn. Nice initial taste but the burn keeps it from being a sipper. As a mixer that burn disappears the flavors come out in a wonderful way. Really enjoyed it with citrus so will keep it around though not the main go to.
Did a Masterclass today with Mount Gay ambassador, Mr Chester Browne, who was really fabulous and a great man. Had this one in the tasting but I think that there was a lot of flavours with my nose (cinnamon, pepper, vanilla) but in my mouth I was disappointed. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I felt betrayed by those promises made to my nose. So that's why I gave it a 6 and not a 7.
This drink reminds me of Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy, while it does not have the finesse of a Mount Gay XO or the 1703 Old flask or Select, it is a good value proposition, good price for what it's worth. It goes well mixed with coconut water, or just drop a few coconut water ice blocks in it and sip away.
Could be smoother. Needs another year or two of ageing. Best of the choices at this bar.
Some will not like neat but I like the flavor profile, which is dry, oaky, and slightly spicy. It has a sweetness and a caramel nose. If I was taking one bottle to drink or share this is one I would consider. It is good neat and makes a fine mixer so you don’t mind others mixing if you go neat. Oh and they ain’t mixing your best sipping rum.
Sugar 0-5 GPL. This rum has an edge to it that took me some time to identify. The normal oak and vanilla is present along with some spices and I couldn't quite decide if it was cinnamon or nutmeg. There is also a bit of smoke and burnt oak-bourbon barrel in this rum. The edge on this rum comes through in a mixed drink (Rum Punch) that reminds you that this sweet drink has rum in it. Great rum for mixing fruit based drinks.
