That's some good stuff
A 1997 Caroni selected by the rum subsidiary of German bottler Malts of Scotland: Isla del Ron. This is cask number IdR 020 bottled in 2018 for the 50th anniversary of the Van Zuylen whisky shop in The Hague, the Netherlands; so this is either a 20 or 21 year old rum.
In the nose it's syrupy sweet, with caramel and tropical fruits like pineapple and peaches. Also cherries, nutty, leather, some green tea, cinnamon, cedar wood and a little varnish. The taste adds a distinct spiciness, clear notes of pepper and wood bitters. This is just a bit too much on the woody side of the spectrum, though it easily takes some water. The finish is pretty long with fruit syrup, bitter citrus, toasted wood and a touch of gasoline/turpentine.
