I have been seeing this rum on the shelves of the grocer for months. Thinking that it was a gimmick to entice the ladies due to it's pink color, I ignored it. Then I found out that it has mayhaw juice added. These are berries that grow wild in the wetlands of the southern US. In this case, the distillery is on the west side of the massive Atchafalaya Basin where these berries are found. I would best describe the flavor of mayhaw as a cross between rose water and pomegrante juice, but this is stretching things a bit.

So I got my 75 proof bottle home and sampled it. Since there are 15 parts rum to 1 part of mayhaw juice, I could barely notice the mayhaw. My guess is that they avoided adding more mayhaw to keep the color down to a light pink. So it looks like my first assumption of creating this flavored rum to appeal to the ladies is correct. It won't go to waste, but I won't buy it again.

Upon further research, The mayhaw berry is rather tart and the jellies that I am used to loving have tons of added sugar to combat this tart taste. No wonder Bayou only added a very small amount of unsweetened mayhaw juice!

Pink. Floral gin aroma. Odd unique fruit flavor. Green apple finish.

This is a pink rum.
Tasted at Flotsam Paradise March 24, 2023
Aroma: herbal, could be mistaken for gin if you weren't paying attention
Flavor: is this peppery? Maybe it's the color but I'd mix this with cranberry juice and grapefruit juice and serve over sonic ice with a lemon twist.

The bottle is the same as Bayou usually use, the colour is unique. Opening the bottle gives a fruity smell and the taste is sweet. I am sure that this rum will find a place in a few cocktails but it is not for sipping.

Pink rum? OK but only for cocktails.
Very hard start with strong spirit noise...

Gives very subtle fruits and flowers on the nose. On palate a bit coconut, more flowers and arrack. very spiky alcohol taste, quite dry. Very cute color. Not so typical rum, but I'll keep it in the cabinet.

It's a waste of time writing and reading about it. There is a whole lot of interesting rums that are worth paying attention to. This one is definitely not one of them. 3/10 is still too high a rating. In fact, it's not even rum because it's not made in the Caribbean.
