Bought in Colombia, in Manizales, I was surprised by the sweetness of this rum.
I'm not a great connoisseur, but what struck me was the lack of burn, and the soft sweetness of this rum, which is not overdone. There is a hint of vanilla.
It is the signature rum from Ron Viejo de Caldas. In nose, banana comes right up. Then, you can feel vanilla and some caramel. In mouth, on the other hand, banana or fruits are hardly there (if not a scent). Oak, vanilla and very little caramel is all I could taste. Afterburn hora away fast. Overall, it is an ok rum, not entirely balanced, and the ABV does not help to accentuate the flavors (not as a strong as your regular rum). I really hope one day I could try a Colombian overproof.
Not a big fan a Ron viejo de Caldas, but I tried this one out last night and I must retract my words. I admit they CAN make good rum; just as long as it’s over 15 years :)
If you can find this one in Colombia, keep it as a reserve. You won’t be disappointed.
