Tasty, but not quite great
When I first started off on rum, this was one that I came across purely because the market at that stage was quite limited, unlike today. It was horrid, and years down the line, I find it no better.
I bought my first and last bottle of this crap a few weeks ago. I can't believe that this is the top selling rum in Jamaica and they drink it straight. All I can say is that life over there must have gotten much worse since I last visited 22 years ago.
It tastes like turpentine or cachaca. It is downright disgusting. Somehow, I managed to drink a half bottle over a one week period. What was I going to do with the rest? I tried using it for lighter fluid for my BBQ pit, but it would not even light. Then I thought about using it as toilet bowl cleaner, but was wary of it ruining my plumbing. Saving it to cure a stray mangy dog was another option.
So, if anyone knew what to do with this, it would be found in Beach Bum Berry's Potions Of The Caribbean book. Sure enough, there was one recipe to tame this "vile" liquid with Jasper's Rum Punch. It is basically the holy Caribbean trinity of rum, lime juice, and simple syrup, but Jasper's adds a much higher proportion of Angostura Bitters and West Indies spices like cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Instead of those ground seasonings, I happened to have a bottle of Peg Leg Pete's Pirate Sauce on hand, which did the trick. In other words, this beast needs to be drowned in seasonings to be made drinkable. And yes, I made a batch of this punch with the rest of the bottle and finished the whole thing off in one long day. Somehow, I was still walking, but was married to the toilet for the next few days. NEVER AGAIN!!!!
I also found out much later that the Jamaican sparkling grapefruit drink called Ting can be added to this to cut the awful taste. The drink is called Ting With A Sting. I finally found a bottle of Ting and added a couple of ounces of Hamilton Jamaican Gold to greatly improve the taste. It is still one disgusting drink, but after a few with Wray & Nephew, you will be too plastered to know how disgusting this combo really is.
Had a lot of overproof rum in my life. This one was undrinkable though. May as well have been drinking White spirits or lighter fluid. Avoid.
I don't understand this....rum, or whatever it is. I don't get how it's getting high ratings when, after I poured it, got a terrible smell as I floated it on my tiki drink that called for an over proof. I figured I had bought a cleaner or something. I by a rum, good or bad, it should taste like rum, not arse.
This is what the old rummies in Jamaica drink. Many a time I bought an old guy at the rum shack a shot of this vile stuff. Brought a bottle home one time and could not drink it! If you want to know what the aficionados refer to as the funky flavor in Jamaican rum this is the worst example.
Had a rum tasting on a sunny afternoon, because why not. Wrey & Nephew White Overproof simply cannot be mixed because you get the funky glue coming straight through from every single imaginable soda. Tried it neat once, and believe me, drinking gasoline goes down easier. Bottle looks boring, but the label design is very nice.
Err...people giving this high marks? Really? OK, so it's great in a cocktail, especially a zombie...but hang on, almost any rum here is ok if you mix it with something so you can't taste it, and the best bstuff you wouldn't want to do that to anyway. So you want to get off-your-head-drunk...fine, just drink twice as much good stuff!
It smells like gasoline, it tastes like bad absinthe or something gone off. The only overpowered alcohol I thought was even vaguely interesting was greek Raki...and this is nowhere near as good....save your money.
I have been trying to finish this bottle for 2 years, I gave it away twice, and it came back, like a bad penny. If I had known it was so bad, I would have bought 151. At least it tastes like rum. I thought it was a spoiled batch, until I read some other reviews. I can't even describe the taste. To call it gasoline, would be bad for the hydrocarbon.
