This is a bottle of “fine” rum from R.W.S. Distillery in Lafayette LA. From the tag attached to the bottle:
R.W.S. Distillery is rooted in fertile South Louisiana and therefore does not rely on the importation of foreign molasses or sugar. We adhere to a meticulous, small batch method to produce a distillate like no other.
Fine Rum is a five-year blended rum. Our aging staves include cuttings from cherry, hickory, persimmon, pear and others and are harvested from trees planted by our founder’s own ancestors. We apply the perfect char by hand and our rum begins its maturation over the staves. Finally, a proprietary quantity of raw sugarcane juice is introduced into every bottle, giving each sip a signature, cane-cured fullness. David C. Meaux, founder and distiller.
Further research (with help from The Rumcast guys via Patreon) indicates that R.W.S. Distillery no longer exists, but is now Wildcat Brothers (where R.W.S. refers to “Rank Wildcat Spirits”). Best guess is that the “fine” rum has been rebranded as “Noire Rum”, but now using “…white oak and ancestral fruit tree hardwood staves”.
As far as I can tell from my research, they only used fresh pressed cane juice from Louisiana.
ABV: 40%
Nose: Lots of campfire smell. I get some fruit, like over-ripe mango. A little bit of cinnamon. The smoke really stands out though.
Palate: A little thick on the tongue. Definite sweetness (from the added cane juice I would presume.) The smoke is subdued on the taste. I get some almond and complex fruit – mango, pineapple, apricot.
Finish: Finish is a bit short, with a lingering sweetness.
Rating: 5/10
The sweetness is a bit much for my taste, but it really isn’t a terrible sipper (trying hard not to damn with faint praise here). I will definitely use this as a mixer, especially with cocktails that use demerara syrup, while cutting back on the syrup a bit.

Different! (In a good way). RWS Distillery, Lafayette Louisiana USA. I took a real chance on this. Never heard of it. No age statement. Cost $25. No mistaking this is a small batch hand crafted distillation. Smooth. Plenty of bite. Some different flavors including persimmon and cherry. Cinnamon and praline notes. Very complex. There is a lot under the surface. Nice long finish. I like it!
