Ok, this is right up my alley. Wonderfully sweet, sherry aroma with hints of oak. The flavor is that of smooth bourbon, molasses, vanilla, and subtle spices. The finish has very little burn and leaves you wanting more. Looking forward to getting a bottle soon.
Got this 5cl sample in batch No2 from RR Tasting Club and participated in the virtual tasting yesterday.
The Abuelo XII Two Oaks is a 12yo rum stored in two different types of oak barrels. First on traditional Tennessee whiskey / bourbon casks during 11 years, and then a final storage on deep-fried casks of new American white oak.
It’s produced from both molasses and sugar cane juice by Varela Hermanos.
The sugar content is 24 gpl, so it’s sweet but not extremely sweet.
In nose it’s possible to recognize smoke, vanilla and coffee.
In mouth and palate it’s possible to recognize the same aromas + chocolate, but it’s also spicy and of course sweet.

This is an incredible rum sweet but not to sweet like the centuria or xv sherry. Incredible going down no bite you can drink this all day and of course you can share with a special person omw to get a bottle

Because this is a bourbon aged rum, I didn't expect to like it as much as the Abuelo Tawny, Oloroso, or Napoleon rums. But I found this better than all of them! The Centuria is still king of the Abuelos to me, but this is my #2 Abuelo as of this review. Has a nice sweetness to it that complements the bourbon aging well.
Smells and tastes of molasses, spice, almonds, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, and oak.
A very good rum and a big surprise!
I got a sample from RR tasting club and attended a charming meeting with presentation of Abuelo rums.
The aroma is not too intense, quite sour with some smoke, and oak. There are some fresh Agricole notes, together with humid wood.
First sip strikes with overwhelming sweetness of a rich sugar syrup. Many fruits can be distinguished: apricot, grapes, raisins, figs and apples, together with almonds and coconut. Then the bitterness and take of the barrel appears but it is hugely attenuated by continued caramel sweetness. Smoky notes come at the end, a nice alternative to the wooling sweetness.
The taste doesn't last for long, on the other hand almost no alcohol can be sensed. The overall experience is poor, it is just a thick sweet syrup.
It is surprising that the rum is said to be unadulterated and yet tastes like a true sugar bomb.
I got this as part of the rum ratings tasting club. It has lots of caramel and lots of oak in it, with a hint of other spice. A nice finish as well, without too much burn.
The smell is inviting you to take a sip: vanilla, fruit and a little bit of wood are luring you in. The taste starts of quite spicy and not so complex. Then the burn, whereafter it breaks down in to a nice variety of flavours. It flows nicely into sweetness consisting of vanilla, caramel and a hint of fruit. The aftertaste lingers nice and long, mainly because of the smokiness of it.
It was too sweet for my liking at the first tasting but the second time around a enjoyed it way more. Its halfway between a Centenario 20 and a Foursquare Sagacity in that respect. Enjoy!
Wouw you can taste deep deep wood in this one. Great nose and taste with lots of wood and ash. The sweetness is there, but well balanced. Well done Abuelo.
