The H.S.E. (Habitation Saint Etienne) Extra View XO is an Agricole Blend from Martinique. The used distillates that were stored in oak barrels between 10 - 50 years. It is bottled with 43% drinking strength. The Agricole Rhum, of course, has no additives. The dark rhum comes in a simple but very high-quality bottle. The cork really stuck hard.

In the glass, the Rhum makes an absolutely high-quality impression. He walks heavy along the glass and pulls beautiful streaks. Light and fresh, it reproduces fruity notes. Grassy with sweet mocca note and some spice come through. Over time he evolves more wood notes. Also some nut and smoke resonate. Simply great and multi-layered. On the palate, the Rhum is very intense. Dry, strong oak, tobacco and smoke notes unfold. This is where Bourbon Feeling comes in. It is captured by a very pleasant light floral sweetness. Vanilla and seasoning such as nutmeg and pepper are included. Absolutely full-bodied, the finish comes with a slight warm sharpness and leaves a pleasant barrel note in the mouth. Smoke and wood with a slight vanilla aroma persist for a long time. Absolutely awesome. Simply delicious.

For me, one of the best aged Agricoles i've drunk so far. And at 65 euros quite affordable. The H.S.E. shows how much power and potential lies in the Agricole. For me an absolute enrichment and the perfect change to the molasses rum. Should everyone try who likes it dry and complex. The sweet rum drinkers should perhaps try a sample first. For bourbon drinkers the perfect variety. Absolutely top.

Absolut Top.

bought this bottle because very happy to have their VSOP rhum
it s not correct to say 8 years, it s a blend of rums aged from 6 to 10 years
in new French and American oak barrels
tasting this after lunch, with a medium strength Nicaraguan cigar ...
nose: ripe fruits and vanilla, alcohol (but not too much, it s a good 43% ABV)
in the mouth you will find a lot of wood mixed with ripe fruits
a dry but rich and smooth agricole rhum with a medium long woody and fruity finish
can t say it s better than the VSOP (also excellent), it s different but also very good
rum from Martinique have AOC (controlled designation of origin) that is a warranty !
no other place in the world have this standard for rums yet
i recommend this one to single malt drinkers ... because it s dry, no additives, woody,
rich and with good enough ABV and complexity !
if you like Zacapas and Diplomaticos don t buy this ...
ok it s not cheap, here in Croatia; but for example i cannot buy a (also woody
and oaky) Macallan 12 sherry cask for same money,
and now i can say it have the quality for the price ...
also interesting is what level of quality they can achieve with a column still distillation
(not a pot still distillation)
price/quality = 10 !!!

Lovely complex nose, with loads of mocha, brown sugar, tobacco, wood, wet earth, banana and almonds. Dark and inviting with a hint of copper and smoke even.

Dry and rich on the palate, with loads of oak, nuts again, overripe fruits, grasses, tobaccoleaf - quite similar to the nose, but a bit sharper and shorter.

The finish is medium and drying. Solid stuff this, but a tad too short on the palate for absolute greatness.

After trying a few VSOPs, I wanted to try something with a bit more age on it. Looked around for a few recommendations on here, and saw positive reviews for this, and took a punt.

Not much on the nose. Bit of brown sugar and grass. Taste is very well integrated, with brown sugar, grass, bit of oak, gentle burn. Finish is where the dryness and the grass come to the fore, with a long lingering pleasing burn.

Edit. So, a few weeks have passed, and I'm reappraising this.

Initially, I was underwhelmed. The extra age seemed to have muted the flavours, but coming back to it, I'm picking out subtle complexity. I don't know whether it's oxidation, or whether it's my palate changing, but there is something quite satisfying in this.

Picking up a smoky note, and layers to the brown sugar, on the palate and finish. Right now it's a 7. One of the most enjoyable of the bottles I have open at the min6. Still not sure I'd drop another £65 on another, but then I don't think I'd drop another £75 on another Foursquare 2009, and I'm quite enjoying that too!

Not bad for a Rum Agricole. A lot of wood and a little bit like anis.

Well I would have like to give 8,5, and I should probably lower my other aged agricole accordingly for not giving a 9.

Anyway about tasting, the nose is perfect, very balanced between the grass of the rum and the vanilla+smoke from the barrel.

Instead In the mouth I feel the smoke to be overpowering. I think I just prefer white agricole than aged one, cast and grass don’t match for me but that is very personal. And actually I’m at my second tasting and already like it more so I may revise my note later.

This one smells like bad cognac (VS or VSOP) but explodes with fantastic flavours in your mouth and there is the anis the most significant. Undoubtedly a real good Agricole and one of my favourites.

Strong rhum with dense taste, fire in your mouth at first then some sweet vanilla taste, along wit caramel and wood.
