Thanks so much for submitting a report. It has been emailed to the Rum Captain and will be actioned shortly.
OK this one is a single taste rating. I managed to taste this before it was proofed for the bottle. So it is based on it at about 150-160 proof.
Straight -- The cask wood was mellow. The rum spent time in a used wine cask as well as a used whiskey barrel. You do catch a wine back flavor as well as the whiskey and wood. The sweetness and spiciness is a wonderful melange that starts in the mouth, intensifies and stays in a pleasant afterglow. Smooth is an often used word, but it says it perfectly. I have a bottle of this on my shopping list and plan to re-rate it after tasting the market brew!
After a recent taste at a rum pairings get together, a re tasting and a mixed drink (dark & stormy) confirm my taste rating!
Maybe with some additional aging, this would be a better glass. For now, a wholly average oaky drink that did nothing to distinguish itself.
I was very excited to try this rum, because as of this review, it was rated a "10" with six reviews.
This is just an average gold rum. Smells and tastes a bit hot for only 40%abv. I notice whiskey, oak, and maybe a hint of vanilla, but hardly any rum flavor at all. Might taste better to those that prefer whiskey, but even then it's not a premium whiskey flavor.
Interestingly, four of the six reviewers have ONLY rated Taildragger rums, so I suspect those early reviews are highly biased.
My score only takes into account my perceived flavor, not the over-rating.
I am constantly on the lookout for 8s, 9s and 10s. I think that only makes sense. Why would anyone spend their time looking for 2s, 3s and 4s? This one is very good, but not a 10 - at least not for me. It is strong 9. Basing my rating on the fact that this is truly a fantastic choice, I have had quite a few other fantastic choices as well. I wanted to try the coffee version as well, but could only fit one of these in my suitcase at the time. Next time, the coffee - and perhaps another 10?
I'm a fan of Amber and Spiced rums, over white rums. I love the smooth and very lightly caramel notes I taste in this rum. These guys have a hit! I enjoy this either on the rocks, or making a fantastic Caribbean influenced cocktail....trying it with cola seemed to be a waste of this rum, loosing all the distinctive flavor of the rum, overrun by the Cola taste. Great Job Tailwinds! You are a standard in my home bar.
This has become my go to rum, it outpaces any national brand on flavor and smoothness. Add this to some ginger beer and a squeeze of lime juice and you have the perfect summer night on your hands.
The color is like whiskey. The aging in whiskey barrels gives a slight whiskey flavor yet does not detract from the nice rum flavor. A really nice find! Hopefully it will become more widely available.
Ive always been a rum drinker and I love the darker spiced rums. I tried tailwinds about four months back and I can't wait for more bars and stores to carry it. After trying Taildragger I can no longer enjoy the generic rums like Captain. This is a must try. It has a very unique and delicious flavor that you will not soon forget!
