Tried the Ron Matusalem 23y, 10y and 7y back-to-back. The 23y has a very nice looking bottle, a bit tacky label, but still nice. Color is semi dark, smell is a tad strong but also very much artificial butterscotch. Not bad taste, but far from great. Struggles to earn a 6.
First of all, the "23" is misleading. Years? I doubt it. For a rum that's supposedly been baking in wood in the tropics for a couple of decades, this rum lacks oakiness. Actually, it's not very complex at all. Nothing offensive, but nothing memorable, either. I can't imagine ever needing to buy another bottle of this, when there are so many really compelling rums out there already.
Given my "so so" expirence with the 15 year old little brother, I was very positively surprised with this one. The nose is round with toffee, vanilla, orange, fudge and cherry's. The palette is sweet with butterscotch, vanilla, a bit of chocolate, marcipan, orange peel and some nuttiness. Though it's sweet, I don't find it cloying as the lengthy finish is slightly earthy and tingling, upholding the order. (8,5)
I had high expectations for this rum due to the good reviews. There is too much alcohol smell/burn than I expected for a rum in this price class. Even the taste failed, no long aftertaste and standard taste. Even after a half hour of breathing the alcohol taste was not gone. In 1 word: disappointed!
I was a little bit disapointed by this Matusalem 23. It is not complex and no so different from its youger brother.
If I look at the price, I'll go for the 15 year for sure.
Can you drink it without coke? Yes. Is it a GOOD rum? No. Not the best I've tasted, not the worst. Would l buy it again? Properly not.
It is an OK rum but for my taste... My aspects ware high about the quality about this rum!
Are nuante suave de caramel, lemn si citrice.
I expected a lot of this 23 years but I am very disappointed. The nose is round with caramel , brown sugar, vanilla, and for 23 years the oak is not very present. The palate is strong without complexity and does not have much length. Snif !
Plus doux que prévu mais un régal ... Bcp d'épices.
Bon... mais meilleur avec de la glace !
Matusalem 23 Solera was my first rum that I tried and it was WOW. I forgot about cognac and whiskey. For me, Matusalem 23 solera is better than Zacapa 23 solera but not as good as El Dorado 15, so my score is 9 points. I definitely advise you to try this wonderful rum.
It is not tasting bad - but it does taste a bit fake. Not much oak for all that age. Probably not even close to 23 years....More like 10.
Nice rum but to be honest zacapa 23 is better and about the same price. They are both blended rums between 16 and 23 years. Matusalem 23 has a nice smooth taste with a slight aroma of coffee I find, and a bit of vanilla at the end worth a try but like I say there is better.
Nice and easy, clear view and color. Notes of vanilla, caramel, tobacco an a little orange. Not special, but didn't expect it either, this is a blend but still enjoyable.
Gentle in nose, smooth in mouth but very dry for me. I had it with no ice... maybe with ice it tastes better?
Very well balanced, bit more alcoholic flavor, dark after taste
I think this is good rum.
However, it get too smooth and gets bored.
I like Matusalem 15year more than this.
Tried this at the famous Rum Bar in the beautiful Whitsundays in North Queensland. Lighter than I imagined so not much caramel colouring.. strong alcohol smell at first but settled down after 10 minutes. Dryish , tastes of vanilla , almond or marzipan , brown sugar and a bit of citrus.. not much wood and a shortish ending. Better than the 15 but still a bit dull although worth a try !
Sweet and fruity nice and smooth. A lot nicer than the 15. A really well rounded solera
