Light and fruity on the nose, smooth and delicate on the palate, the light amber-coloured Don Papa has a long, rich-textured finish and offers flavours of vanilla, honey and candied fruits

I've looked at Don Papa for a long long time, as I think that the packaging as A+.

Coming on here (after I bought the bottle) I should have been a little more circumspect. Rarely has a rum scored right across the spectrum like this.

The nose - too sweet
The palate - too sweet
Overall - too sweet

However.....while it is far too sweet, and I suspect the addition of sugar and many other things, there is something about it that is the tiniest bit appealing. It is more appealing if you don't treat it as a rum, but more a liqueur, and does have a sophistication about it that many overly sweet rums miss out. It's strange, but while I dislike Pyrat XO, this is OK (just) but really, there isn't too much difference in the approach they take. I wonder whether giving it 4 is being overly generous {EDIT - yes it is. It is a disgusting rum so I have moved down to 1}, but maybe as it is the first rum from the Philippines that I have had, I have given it the benefit of the doubt (and it is beautifully packaged).

Easy enough to drink, but I won't be buying again. I think I might have to pull this out and drink with my Christmas pudding.

EDIT - I have revisited this bottle (I still find it hard to call it a rum) and while I still don't really like it, if you consider it not as a rum, but as a fruit bomb and a whore at that, it has a certain appeal. I think it very much depends on the mood you are in. BUT it is far too expensive.

This is surely not for me - to sweet and artificial.
Rating this a 3/10
2/10: Because my wife will/can finish the bottle - thinks she actually likes it - she prefers it with a bit of sparkling Water and ice.
+1 ekstra for the awesome looking bottle and label

Oui je suis conscient que c'est une nouveauté dans le marché, que les bars et discothèques on fait de ce produit un incontournable. Mais il y a de mieux. Je vous conseille d'aller voir ailleurs.

It is a very bad spiced rum.
No ageing to find in it.
FAR too sweet, but also bad sweets.
It lacks everything.
Please, do not buy, unless you want it as a present for an enemy.

reminds me of legendario black elixir ... but less sweet ... very aromatic

Too sweet for my taste. However for flavour but lacking in depth. A good thick liqueur with golden colour.

RhumsTeq nailed it with the description of "syrupy." Taste like cough syrup or a really bad sugary fake fruit drink from childhood. Maybe even an unfrozen Flavor Ice.

It's terrible. Try it once for yourself, take my share whilst your at it.

Je vois pas l'intérêt. Trop vanillé à mon goût. Trop doux

Un rhum qui peut se boire a tout heure... Pas trop fort en bouche

Very different from all others I've tasted. What struck me was the taste of bananas, others described it as vanilla (which I tasted as well) but the esters of bananas are definitely present. Well worth the price for a different rum experience. Try the 10 year old if you can find it!
