By far, my favorite rum! Every few months I make sure to grab another top-shelf brand and have yet to find anything as smooth, spicy, and perfectly sweet as Private Stock. Reading the other reviews, it almost seems like people simply refuse to rate this highly because it's not aged (and expensive), and Captain is known for mixing... stop letting the money you spend influence your opinion of something. No, I'm not 18 and just started drinking, and I'm well aware of how people like to make claims of "complexity" in flavors to justify the high price tags... I also enjoy a nice robust cigar from time to time with some nice brandy or cognac, so I get the draw to certain really strong developed flavors.
But I also understand the psychology behind giving a product a higher (or lower) rating based on the price tag of the item, and I think that's what's going on here... There are some aged rums that have average ratings at 9 or higher, with their less-aged counterparts scored one point lower. the truth is, it's rare to find a single point of difference in aging something 10 more years. Sure, more age can make it smoother and a little more refined, but in all my personal taste testing I've rarely found something that costs twice as much that was actually 10% better... Really old rum that tastes like crap, is just "really old rum that tastes like crap" that you just spent a lot of money on and feel the need to justify the expense. This is GREAT rum, and it's affordable. Excellent for sipping neat, or on the rocks... for something a bit different, put it in your snifter and light it on fire to heat it up a bit! (maybe 10 seconds).
All that said, I am well aware that individual taste preference is a matter of qualia. My point is... This is by far the smoothest, best tasting top-shelf rum I've had to date (out of about 20 diff top-shelf options). don;t let "price" influence your review.
Seductive scents of banana, vanilla, nuts and spices fills my nostrills with delight.
Spice and sweet molasses hits the pallate and surprices me with an unexpected roundness.
Always considered the captain to be a mixer but this one is a great sipper.
This rum is hard to beat for the price and availability. You can find it pretty much anywhere. Sure it isn't aged for 50 years and all fancy pants. Its smooth, sweet flavor is still awesome!
This is a very drinkable one.. Sweet and smooth.. Always a good choice
This is one of my favourite Rums to mix with Coke.
This is a nice rum you can drink straight or pollute with soda or juice. It's worth every penny and I love it!
best morgan on the market for the the 20 euro price.i had it on my vacation in croatia.even my friends sad what kind of morgan is this this is different.its way different.buy it try it and enjoy it.
This has been a staple at my house for years as a decently-priced mixing rum. Sweet, spicy, and rich, can be used in any recipe that calls for a spiced rum. Its the only CM product i've bought for several years; the small price difference between this and regular Captain Morgan is an easy choice for me, noticeably better spiced rum, for only a few more dollars. Winner!
Are there better Rums....yeah. Are there better Rums for $22....not really.
This was the first rum I enjoyed straight when just starting out. For the price its really hard to beat. Very drinkable and good for mixing also. I do not however like any other Captain products. I still keep an extra 1.75 around for guest as it generally keeps them away from my more pricey stock...
Taste rum , surprise for C.Morgan.
Little sweet w good smell , for the good. Recommend to try .
Captain Morgan was actually a 17th century Welsh pirate...

There are so many mixed reviews on this one, so I had to try the top rated one from The Captain since their 1671 was long gone before I could try it. As you can tell, I am now running out of rums to try that are easily available and priced sensibly. I knew before I plunked down $26 for this bottle that it was a sugar bomb with 45 grams per liter of added sugars and other things. God knows what, but it screams artificial. All I can taste is pepper, vanilla, and strange chemicals. This will give you one king hell of a hangover the next day if you drink more than one small glass. I am not about to try because I know what will happen based up my knowledge of added sugars. This one is just too much. But to new rum drinkers, it may just taste good because it takes a few years to graduate from ice cream and snow cones full of syrup.
To give you an idea, as of this writing, the top 12 most popular rums on this site all have 20 grams per liter of added sugar or more except for Havana Club 7 from Cuba that is not available in the USA. Interesting find! Most new rum drinkers are attracted to those sweet rums and sugar bombs. How does one break that cycle and work their way down to dry rums with only 0-9 gpl of added sugar.? Drink LOTS of this stuff in one night!!!! Suffer like hell the next day!!!! Then you will be looking up semi-dry rums (with only 10-19 gpl of added sugar) and most of those will not make you sick the next day.
Update 11 days later: As usual with any new rum, I only take one sample for the rating and then leave the bottle sit for months unless it is really good. This one had all the makings of eventually going down the drain despite my generous rating of 5. I poured some on the rocks and it is at least tolerable to drink. There are also a lot of rums that are worse than this one that I have ranked even lower in my "cabinet". Since this is the best from the Captain, I now change their name to Captain Crap! Of the two other mass producers of rum, both Bacardi and Cruzan each have 5 rums that I have rated better than this one.
Youngsters, do yourself a favor and bid anything by The Captain farewell and shove his ass out to sea without a paddle!!! It is now time for you to move on to MUCH better rums!
