By far, my favorite rum! Every few months I make sure to grab another top-shelf brand and have yet to find anything as smooth, spicy, and perfectly sweet as Private Stock. Reading the other reviews, it almost seems like people simply refuse to rate this highly because it's not aged (and expensive), and Captain is known for mixing... stop letting the money you spend influence your opinion of something. No, I'm not 18 and just started drinking, and I'm well aware of how people like to make claims of "complexity" in flavors to justify the high price tags... I also enjoy a nice robust cigar from time to time with some nice brandy or cognac, so I get the draw to certain really strong developed flavors.

But I also understand the psychology behind giving a product a higher (or lower) rating based on the price tag of the item, and I think that's what's going on here... There are some aged rums that have average ratings at 9 or higher, with their less-aged counterparts scored one point lower. the truth is, it's rare to find a single point of difference in aging something 10 more years. Sure, more age can make it smoother and a little more refined, but in all my personal taste testing I've rarely found something that costs twice as much that was actually 10% better... Really old rum that tastes like crap, is just "really old rum that tastes like crap" that you just spent a lot of money on and feel the need to justify the expense. This is GREAT rum, and it's affordable. Excellent for sipping neat, or on the rocks... for something a bit different, put it in your snifter and light it on fire to heat it up a bit! (maybe 10 seconds).

All that said, I am well aware that individual taste preference is a matter of qualia. My point is... This is by far the smoothest, best tasting top-shelf rum I've had to date (out of about 20 diff top-shelf options). don;t let "price" influence your review.

It's like kraken if kraken didn't suck. Not a smooth sipper, thick oily and sweet but gets way too much heat. I don't care for it that much because of the excessive amounts of molasses/brown sugar with vanilla. It makes a distinct diet coke and rum but I think there are better options. Especially for it's price (25$)

A pretty decent mixer especially with cola. Has a pretty heavy vanilla flavoring with hints of caramel, sort of makes cola taste like Vanilla Coke. Wouldn't drink it straight or on the rocks (although the label recommends it on the rocks!) but it's a good choice if you just want to pick up a relatively cheap commercial rum for mixing.

nice bottle and corked presentation... you can see they are aiming above the regular stock... but taste still needs refining ..doesnt beat sailor jerry on the taste front

Certainly not an elaborate rum to sip on but pleasant nonetheless.

Sweet to the smell, with vanilla scents. Tastes sweet and smooth. Great for an everyday type drink

If you don't like sickly sweet vanilla this wont be for you, but if your stuck at the in-laws over the holidays it might just get you by, barely. It is great for the price and availability.

Too sweet. Spices overwhelm and tastes artificial. Horrible aftertaste. I thought things would have improved since the horrific cheap Captain Morgan rum from my college days in the early to mid 80s...I was wrong...just expanded into other horribleness. If I had started with this rum when I got into rums earlier this year I might have rated it higher but I've sampled far superior rums than this so this is indeed barely drinkable and I would have to drown in Coke Zero in order to make it palatable. So I'm down to this: should I pour it down the sink into the septic tank (thereby inebriating the microorganisms in there) or push this off to some friends (thereby running the risk of making them EX-friends)....hmmm....

Choice is obvious...

As far as Captain Morgan rums go, this is the one I buy for myself (not for parties, cocktails or anything like that).

It's probably the only one I would drink neat, actually. This one and Oakheart are my 2 favorite "commercial rums"

Split 3/4 of a bottle of this with a friend in high school many moons ago. I remember it being only marginally smoother than the original Captain (my drink of choice in high school) although it had a higher alcohol percentage, and similar in flavor. In spite of drinking so much, the night ended just fine- the reason I haven't revisited this rum is that it was nothing memorable for the price.

This is what I like to sip on. Straight up or on a few ice berg chunks.
Smooth and mellow.
