Unfortunately, this rum was acquired by a large conglomerate who switched distilleries, changed the underlying rum, and dumped in a ton of sugar. They took what used to be a solid 8.5-9 rated rum and turned into and overly sweetened vanilla extract syrupy mess. I was hoping that after a couple years they would realize the error of their ways and return to the old formula...but they haven’t. Accordingly, I have to change the review to reflect the currently available version of this with the green label. Below is the review for the previous version.

**The old formula comes in a bottle with a woven wicker sleeve, cursive writing, and a cork top. So if you find a bottle of Zaya with a wicker sleeve, get it; if it doesn’t have the wicker sleeve pass it over for now. This was my favorite rum until I tried Plantation XO. If you didn’t know any better and picked up a glass of this blindfolded you could be forgiven for thinking you were drinking a smoother more subtle version of a dry subtle version of vanilla cherry coke with a hint of oak. My only issue with it is the finish. Towards the end of a glass it leaves a slight pucker but it is otherwise an outstanding rum. 8+

My goto sipping rum! Easy on the burn, wonderfull long finish. Yes it hits the nose with venilla but the sweet caramel taste makes this what I find perfect after dinner drink.

I discovered this rum and it changed my view of rum. Previously only thought of rum as a mixer. This is my got to sipping rum and at a great price. Very and a nice finish.

This is the rum that opened my mind to rum beyond a crap rum and coke. This rum is perfect on an ice cube. Truly one of the best liquors available of any kind. Some spice and a touch of sweet.

This is an excellent rum. It maybe the smoothest rum readily available. This is a great sipping rum. It's easy to drink a lot without realizing how much you've had. However, the vanilla overwelhms the taste. This isn't necessarily a good or bad thing depending on how you feel about vanallia. It is one of my favorite flavors but every thing else gets lost. If it wasn't so smooth I'd rate it lower. It's also a good value at about $30 a bottle for such a smooth rum. If you have friends who think they don't like rum, this is a good one to get them started with.

sweet vanilla with hints of raisin and spices. I like sweet rums and this one fits the bill.

Overall, this is an excellent rum. It's tastes great, looks good , finishes, excellent. The only downside is that it's generally pricey, but if price isn't a factor then, this is the best, or at least right up there.
