I tend to gravitate towards spiced rum. That being said I enjoyed this very much. Not to much of anything overpowering. well balanced. I like the old bottle I have better than the new one.
This stuff has a very nasty artificial bubble gum taste, I am quite surprised that so many people have given this good ratings.
I first tried this rum in Hawaii way back in 1994. My memory of it was awful, so I have ignored it every time I see it on the shelves. I walked into one store and there were all of the Whaler rums on the bottom shelf, with this one only being $15. So I thought WTF and bought it.
All I can say now is that it is slightly smoother than Myer's Dark. I gather that casks of this Hawaiian rum are now shipped to the bourbon capital of the world in Bardstown, Kentucky, which is where this is now bottled. I no longer find it disgusting, but I have had many more rums that taste a lot worse than this one. This will do well in coffee, and basically, that is all this rum is good for.
Bottle shape a bit different but otherwise identical appearance to one on this site. One liter $10 at Trader Joes, $12 at Bevmo. While sweetness is probably influencing my opinion, its a great QPR (quality to price ratio)
Wow I was expecting a deep dark rum and at sight it is nearly black but nose was very artificial vanilla and strong . The mouth was a bit sweet as well as the finish . I tried it neat and my conclusion was I had better mix it . As a mixer I found it just okay but not that bad. I would use this Rum as a party Rum as long as there is plenty of Coca Cola to subdue itโs artificial flavor. The bottle is classic but that is where I stop recommending this spirit. All in all it is passable. If itโs a sweet , earthy rum you want then you found it
I love the sweet yet musky burn to it!!!! The sweet flavor is almost like a molasses taste.
Decent dark rum, kinda falls short on the finish. Good with a splash of coke though..
Unlike someone else, I didn't detect a noticeable sweet fragrance from the bottle but more a subtle sweet odor. It does have a sweet flavor to it with an unexpected complexity to it. This could make for a nice sipping rum if you like the sweet ones. IMHO one of the better dark rums for mixing. Works well in Coke Zero. [NOTE: Used 3oz in a 16.9oz Coke Zero mixed together in a cup and it is outstanding!]
Very sweet smell coming from this one right out the cork. Of fruit and maybe some toffee. No real alcohol smell. In the glass it smells like straight alcohol. Drinking it straight isnt a bad idea. Has a little bite up front. But the smell of alcohol chokes you so I wouldn't recommend. In coke it tastes like the smell of the bottle. Has a nice fruity entry with some sweetness then a bitter after taste that I dont like. So I dont really care for this rum. HOWEVER if you like Kraken this is just as good and a little cheaper. In reality its very similar to kraken with more sweetness.
I was sure about this one but I was in Hawiai so I tried a bottle. I was pleasantly suprised.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This is another rum I use with ginger beer. It's dark and smooth enough to offset the light and crispy taste of the ginger beer and create the perfect afternoon delight!
